I have a 96 stock explorer (4.0). During a road trip the other day the temp gauge went to hot and my warning light came on. I hit the brakes and the gauge dropped. The next time it happened I gave it gas and the gauge dropped. I went home and replaced the sending unit and TStat. Now the gauge goes from cold to hot in short order. I took temps on the sending unit to find it at 143 and the head at 185.

Any thoughts? Is there an after market gauge anyone would suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe air trapped in the system? My daughter's 626 did the same thing. I "burped" the system by opening up the coolant tank and letting the car run a few minutes with heat on to let air bubbles out of the system. Sounds crazy, but I could see the bubbles come into the tank and "pop". When they quit I placed the cover back on the tank. Has not happened again and this has been 6 months ago now.

I'll give that a try. I'm about to put black tape over the warning light and call it good! LOL

Thanks
