96 XLT
So I have been reading and I haven't seen any posts with this question on it... so here goes.

I have a 96 XLT with the 4 liter. Anyway, I am having what I think is a transmission problem.

When put my truck in reverse after it has been sitting for a while (overnight or a couple of hours sometimes) it sometimes takes several seconds for it to actualy engage.

If I am on a hill the tranny will not hold the X in place with out application of the brake.

Occational upon shifting from park to Drive or Reverse the tanny will clunk.

I think I am having one more symptom of a tranny problem (although it might be a IAC problem). When I am sitting still the truck hesitates a bit, but the RPMs appear not to move.

Then I could be crusing at 40 mphs and it will do the same thing (steady gas and RPMs but the engine feels like it is going to stall and there is a noticable loss of power).

Once this problem starts you can almost count 9 seconds between each "almost stall"...like clock work.

Thank you in advance. I hope that someone knows for sure about this problem.

wow, ummmmmmmmm i do not know about the 9 second thing, but my 93 did the clunk in revese and drive thing. i think it is somewhat common.
but i did a tranny filter and gasket $13.99 AutoZone then a home tranny flush another $10 bucks, but I tell you what, there isno more clunk, or hesitation when shifting. i will search for the right tread.

When was the last time the transmission was serviced fluid change, filter, etc?

Low/reverse servo

is associated with this problem in the A4LD and the 4R55E. This band operates in first and reverse and has an improved double lip O ring. Only 4 more bolts after you remove the pan. Don't put that $13.99 metal screen filter in. There is an improved one for the 97 that fits. $23 locally or $10 at www.bulkpart.com Do a search for low/reverse servo for the procedure.

thank you

I don't think it's the fluid, becuase it was changed about 15,000 miles ago (or close enough). I will try the servo thing and see what I can come up with.....this sounds like a winner though.

man we need a tranny forum

Or a basic run down on all the standard problems with our trannies.

Anyway I am also curious to know if there is anything else I can replace or have clean while I am having the l/r servo gasket changed out? Any other gaskets in there that are easy to get to?

I guess I am going to go ahead and have it flushed out and get a good fliter as well, but I fugured that I might as well replace anything else in the tranny that is easly accessable.

make sure to check the valve body. my ex has had it replaced twice.

Nothing else to do but check the bolts

on the VB and tighten them. Just a good twist. About 9 ft-lb which is less than most torque wrenches read. These problems are more common with the next years transmission. The procedure is located in this thread is located at:

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=60887&goto=newpost

Somewhere on page 2 among these 50+ posts. The procedure is the same as are the filters. Look at www.atcdg.com link for a picture of the servo.
