Hello all.
My daughter has an 02 AWD Mercury Mountaineer with the flashing O/D light and transmission slipping. Against my advice, she took it to a friend who is supposedly a diesel mechanic at the local Peterbilt facility. He says he rebuilt the transmission and changed out the driver side balljonts, that's another story.
Anyway, he had the vehicle for over a month and she finally got it back yesterday. When she picked it up another friend drove it the 40 miles home and said that the light was still on and the trans was still slipping. She had one of her friends dad look at it and he says there is no evidence that the trans has been out of the vehicle. He could tell the bolts on the crosmember and the eng mating bolts had not been touched. He said he could also tell the exhaust had not been removed.
I drive OTR so I am not home to see this and yes, I know a few a things wrenching myself. I own a 6.0 diesel and 22 yrs of acft maint experience.
When I called the guy who supposedly worked on it, he says he rebuilt it with new pump, bands and new fluid. He says it did not slip when he drove it but he only drove it for about 6 blocks. He also says the reason for the light still on is that the bushings for the front diff are so worn that it moves about 5" when you rock the vehicle and that the speed sensors, due to the diff bushings, is what is causing the light and the slipping.
Now, in all of my research, several months worth, I have not once found anything, anywhere about the bushings causing this. And to me, if they were worn enough that it moved 5", we'd have more to worry about than the trans slipping.
Any help would be appreciated but I think I already know what the answer is.
And about the ball joints he said was pressed in, yeah, within that 40 miles of highway driving, the upper one fell out.
My assumption is that this POS just took advantage of a 19 yr old single mother that was in his one of his college classes. By the way, he took her for about $1,000
