Another transmission question

Thanks for the tip, Eneurb. I was aware that there were different sizes, although didn't know there were four. I plan to mark the locations, or maybe mark a diagram to keep track. Any other tips?

Is the separator plate attached to the valve body, so that "stuff" can't drop out upon removal?

Yeah, there's a few torx bolts that hold it on. The repair kit comes with instructions that show what parts to remove, and where the check balls should be incase one falls out of place.

DOes anyone have any idea of how much time this would take a "stealership" to do the recommended change and maybe gasket work to the valve body ? I want to have the right info on hand so they don'trip me off when i ask them to do this.

Cheers

Steve

I'd never take a vehicle to a dealership for something tranny related. I'd call an independant tranny shop, and they should be able to quote you a price right over the phone.

Thanks for the advice, following the other advice on the Ford TSB an independent is going to look at the job for me and reckon on it being around £200 ($380).

That still seems like alot. Ford did mine when i had them change fluid/filter since you only have to drop the pan to do it, not the entire tranny. Didn't charge for it either, just charge for the fluid service..... Gcrop just did it himself. Read his thread. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126892

We charge 4 hours labor to do it.

same exact thing is happening on my 99 exploder that i bought 3 weeks ago(flare 2-3 shifts/ o/d off light flashing). i work at the local "stealership", so i will get about half off, i guess they will be doing it tomorrow. this is my daily driver, i need to make it last as long as possible.
I knew it couldnt be the tranny because it doesnt slip when you shift it manually. Ill let you all know what it costs me to get fixed tomorrow or so
Thanks everyone! ;)

im still extremely pissed that i bought this thing 3 weeks ago, and 1500 miles later i gotta get tranny work done :fire:

I have a 5R55E and it just hit the wall on me last night. The O/D Off light has been flashing on me for the last three days now, why I don't know??? It made some really weird shifts and then it would not pull any more. It slipped many times shifting back and forth between low gears and high gears. I had no idea what was going on in there. When I went to WOT it shifted one time and started to pull the car. I drove the car another mile or so and it totally quit on me, tranny wise  . With this description, what am I looking at, damage wise??? And if I am looking at damage, what kind of money am I looking at to get it fixed???

Also, when I used my OBD II scanner when the light started flashing, it would give ma a code 0. I was hopeing to see something like a code 07XX or something to do with the transmission, but all I got was the 0. When I cleared it, the light would go off and then come right back on just a little bit later. After clearing the code 25 times in one mile, on the highway running 705 MPH, I just let it blink and I went on.

My question is if the tranny goes out, will not move the car forward or backwards, and leaves a puddle on the ground between the bellhousing and the block, will these kits fix that problem or am I looking at getting another tranny??? Will these kits also make the O/D light stop flashing???

Jim B :D .

UPDATE....Truck went into local garage last Thursday(hadn't been playing up for a few days) they changed the ATF fluid and tightened up the valve body bolts while they had the pan off ......lasted 1/2 a day and it's back to flaring up from 2nd to 3rd again  Looks like it's time to change the gasket then? would you agree ?

Dave

That would the logical next step.

This site has more threads on these issues, and more pictures in those threads than all other sites combined. There is a recent thread on a valve body rebuild with pictures and even one on a full transmission rebuild, with pictures (hundreds of em). One of the more fun ones is where a guy is taking parts from other transmissions and retrofitting em.... yep, with pictures! Check the useful threads forum.... and do some searches. I see you are new, Welcome to one of the best sites you could have found. Look no further, LOOK here.
