I have a 97 Ford Explorer XLT i bought used about 5 yrs ago. Over the summer, the car sat idle and the battery went dead. I replaced the battery the other day. I put in the new battery and when i went to start it the horn started blaring constantly. I disconnected the battery. I left it unhooked overnight, then tried hooking the battery back up, still blaring, hit the lock/unlock on the driver side with the door closed, still nothing. I have hooked it up and tried to hit the buttons on the keychain , still blaring. The vehicle will start with no problem, just the horn blares whenever the battery is connected.

Is there a way to disable the system? Will disconnecting the horn do the trick, or will it cause the battery to go dead because the antitheft system is triggered? I want to avoid taking it to the dealership as i dont want to put $300 bucks into it if i can help it as we only use the vehicle to take the kids to school(10 minutes a day monday through friday)and will be trading it in for a new vehicle in a couple of months.

I'm not sure if I have this sequence correct, but connect the battery, hold the remote fob's panic button a couple seconds, then put the key in the ignition and turn it on the first click.

When I got my 1996 in 2003, I immediately took it down to a generic car stereo/alarm shop and had the anti-theft system removed. It took them about 20 mins and cost me $40 or so.

I understand why they had it installed when it was brand new, but I didn't think it was a big theft target at 7 years/100k.

I'd pull the horn relay and test it for short circuit. Sometimes, low voltage can cause it to fuse in the on position.

With it blaring, unlock the driver door with the key. That stopped mine. My THEFT light was on, horn blaring, and I couldn't start it.

If that doesn't work, PM me...

I think you also need to have the hood closed.
