So, this summer I'll most likely be working at a place where I will be putting about 90 miles per day on whatever I'm driving, so I've been looking for a work beater that gets 30+ mpg. I've found a 1995 Eagle Talon ESI with about 60k on it for a decent price. I haven't looked at it yet, because my job hasn't been completely confirmed yet, but if, when I go look at the car, what should I look for?

no comments? I figured someone on this site would have experience with these.

Back in college I dated a girl that had a '93 Eclipse with the n/a 4 banger. Car was decent and I don't remember her having any problems with it. It seemed to be okay on gas, but I don't remember it getting 30mpg--more like mid to upper 20's. Not a fast car, but for commuting to work that really doesn't matter, right? If it is in good working order, I would think for $2k it wouldn't be too bad.

My 2¢: look elsewhere.

The first gen Talon/Eclipse/Lazer was the first car that I have seen Consumer Reports give a negative reliability  Although, I have no idea if the second gen are any better or worse, or if CR was testing the 4g63 turbo.

On another note, my manager had a 95+ ESI. Not an aggressive driver or anything like that. Motor failed for some reason, mechanically. Not oil or coolant related, but something wore out and failed. Maybe camshaft related. The car had less than 100K on it also :thumbdwn:

My 92 Toyota Paseo has a bit over 200K. Still original motor.

my 4g63 has 340,000 k uses about a litre of oil every 4-5,000 k's

Engine A periodic problem on this vehicle is failure of the Timing Belt on the 2.0L DOHC turbocharged engine only. A failed Timing Belt will prevent the vehicle from starting. If the Timing Belt breaks while driving, the Engine Valves are usually damaged.

the above was from napafix.coms Reliability Report (members only though). Hope that helps ya out some.

A guy at work just bought a Talon for his son - he fixed it up with a few hundred dollars and it's running great again. I think you'll be fine
