I am getting this God awful sound from my brakes at low speed. It sounds like metal to metal contact to me. I am having a really hard time duplicating the sound at the dealership because it usually happens first thing in the morning. The dealership has said they checked the brakes etc. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The dealership literally has no idea what it is and has pretty much told me to pound sand.

The brakes sound pretty "rusty". The sound that is most worrying happens around the 9 second mark. I think you will definitely hear it clearly.

Sometimes when I am braking it feels like my brakes are warped. Once I actually stop and inch forward it is evident that they are not actually warped. Could something else give one the sensation that the rotors are warped? Sorry for the dumb questions; as you can tell I do not know much about cars...

I'm no expert either but I thought that one indication of warped rotors was that you would feel a 'pulsing' in the brake pedal when applying the brakes. I'm sure someone will respond to that.
It sue sounds like metal to metal contact. Since the dealership is unable to reproduce it, I can see where they may become frustrated since everything appears to be in good working order.
Have you had a brake service done on your Explorer yet? Mine is 2 years old and has only 8000 miles on it but the dealer suggested a brake service (clean, lube, adjust) be done. Since I was having the Winter wheels taken off anyway I agreed to have it done.
In the video it looks like you are backing up. Are you also applying the brakes at this time? Have you tried this going forward first thing in the morning to see if it also makes this noise under the same conditions?

As odd as it's going to sound, take it to your dealer and have a transmission tech look for contact between the brake line and the transmission cooler line...Don't ask me why, but I have seen a couple fifth gen explorers with what the customers described as 'transmission whine, brake noisy, etc' and it was because of these two lines touching.

peterk9 - that's right brake pad warping (prevalent on the heavy ford excursions)
is really noticeable when stopping and sounds nothing like that !)

but WOW - what a sound!!! you showed this to the dealer ?

does sound metal to metal - but too loud IMHO to be brakes... actually sounding like something being 'released' to me...

stupid question & and low tech fixes first :)

is it possible your antenna or something is hitting something in your garage?
maybe your tires are rolling over and releasing a metal bar ?!?!?

does it do it if not parked in your garage overnight ?
Any obvious LONG scratch marks on the side of your Explorer from the garage framing ? :(

I know WAG's :) but just trying to eliminate some variables and help .

Subscribing to find out what it is !!! good luck and do let us know what it is !

Hi foxtemple,

I can move this up the chain and loop in your regional customer service manager. To get started, send me your information via PM so I can start researching. I'll need your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name.

Thanks!

Crystal

Thank you for the reply. There is definitely nothing rubbing against my ex. This metallic noise is actually relatively new but I have been having ongoing problems with this rubbing sound. The dealership lubricated my front axle;

"CUSTOMER STATES CHECK CLICKING NOISE IN REVERSE WHEN TURNING LUBRICATE
DIAGNOSTIC TEST, R&R FRONT AXLE AND LUBRICATE SHAFTS, RETEST ALL OK"

Could a faulty repair be the cause of my problems?? I switched dealerships and they have no clue what to do.

The actually metallic noise is new but my brakes always sound extremely rusty. You are not going to believe this but; I had my rotors, pads and anchor brackets replaced per the squeaky brake tsb. Very frustrated.
