You should be able to wipe it down with anything like mineral spirits, paint thinner, etc. And yes, I would prime first.

thanks, i have 1 more question. i was going to tape up the back end so overspray doesnt get on it, can i put masking tape on my paint?

Sure, that is what it is for. Won't be a problem unless you forget about it and leave it on for like a year.:p

After you wipe it down with mineral spirits or what ever, go over it with a tack cloth to pick up any lint left over.

Going along with what The X said.
Just make sure it is good and clean. If you have some compressed air blow around the area real well.

Better to have just air blow dirt out of nowhere then your paint gun / can.

You don't want airborne dust particles settling on the paint during/after you shoot it. So if you do use an airgun to blow things off do it way before final wipedown.

thanks for all the help guys. i havent finished it yet but i will over the weekend, im still deciding what kind of paint to use. when i do get done ill post pics.

to make a long story short, i ended up with krylon paint. will that work as good as rustoleum?
