If you're stuck on using edibles, pickup a gallon jug of cooking oil for under $5. It will have the same effect, even better in most cases, as the peanut butter.
I've used tire-shine on my plastics and it works wonders, Mothers back to black is great as well. The only downside to using pb or cooking oil is it will attract a lot of dirt if you get to much oil on it and don't give it a good wipe down after treatment.
There is also the "Heat-gun" method for treating weathered plastics.
