Well....just noticed the other day that I'm getting an intermitt. harsh downshift. It seems to be either 3-2 or 2-1 and it's hard enough that I hear and feel a clunk in the driveline. Not sure if it's a problem with the actual trans or something related to the tuner I have (SCT X3). It's hard to tell but it seems that the faster the rate of decel is (shorter stopping distance) the worse it is. And it doesn't do it all the time. Also another intermitt. problem is on a hard stop just before the vehicle comes to a final stop I feel a clunk or pop type feeling in the brake pedal....kinda almost like the brake pedal gives a little bit. If it's a nice easy stop I don't feel it. If anyone else has experienced either of these please lemme know...thnx!

I get the harsh downshifts periodically, and have since I purchased it, but mine don't usually happen if i'm stopping sharply. With the recent issues i've been having with the transmission I think mine needs to be reflashed. F**king hate computers sometimes.

The brake pedal thing is probably due to warping rotors, and/or old pads.

Nah..pads and rotors are in real good shape.

Don't have the harsh shift in forward gears, but we get it sometimes going into reverse (and yes, we are totally stopped before selecting reverse).

The brake pedal is the ABS kicking in - mine does it right when you least expect it (but usually under hard braking, never on gentle braking)!

It doesn't feel like the ABS kicking in....I work part time as an automechanic and I know what that feels like. This is more of a one time event when stopping.

Couple of things it might be.

Check the rubber boot on the brake pedal on the firewall. Mine seems to "dry" out and gets "scrunchie" if you know what I mean...you can hear it too. When it dries out, the pedal wont have a smooth feel it kinda gets sticky and compresses unevenly.
I spray it with silicone every now and then and it seems to take care of it.

Another option is is the slip yolk in the driveshaft. If its worn you'll feel it move.
Sometimes If I get to a complete stop I'll feel a "bump" just after I take my foot off the brake, sometimes it will happen just before I stop. My truck is under warranty but warranty company says its not worn enough to replace yet.

Anyone with these symptoms?

Hello...got a few new trans sypmtoms that started recently. Curious if anyone else has them. First off I'm getting a driveline "bump" on decel below 10 mph. I noticed there is a TSB for the 4th gen Explorers with the 6 speed trans for the "bump" on decl below 10 mph. Also noticed after the truck sits and I first take off I'm getting a flare in the 1-2 shift. This usually only happens once...seems like it's slipping during the shift. The only trans mods are what was written into my XCal X3 tuner by Henson Performance and I've had the tuner for a little while now so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Anyone else with these problems??

ok...I searched on the trans forum and noticed a TSB on driveline "bump" on decel below 10 mph on 4th gen's with the 6 speed trans. I know it doesn't apply to mine but the symptoms are identical to what I'm having. Also 2 times I've had a flare (slipping type issue) on 1-2 shift after the truck sits for a while. Only does that 1 time then it's fine.

Thnx Brooklyn....Put the first post under '02-'05 modified because I wasn't sure it was a trans problem or not...then once I did realize it I posted one in here. Guess I'll take it to a tranny shop tomorrow and get their opinion. Kicking myself in the butt for not wanting to learn automatic transmission overhaul when I worked as a Ford tech for 10 yrs....lol
