engine swap

hi its possible that you might be able to use other ford/ jag engines as many of them use a similar box and the bell housing is removable. i think if you used more power the box would break. maybe a diesel conversion would be a good one?. less electrics to do. cheers chris

i had a mad idea of buy a 200 tdi land rover discovery and take body off and fit explorer body on the chaiss jack it up big tyres etc great off road toy

the engine out a mustang fits :D

and i have been informed that granada gearboxes fit also, so i think your quest fir interchangeable parts maybe easier than you think. if you have the knowledge, money, and workshop.....................who knows, a v8 fire breathing monster of a tarmac terrorist :D:D

mick.

v8

if you want a v8 explorer it would be easier to import one from U.S. its not just will the engine fit its all the ecu and senders from the engine as they control the gear changes via the pcm.
now for the old geezer bit when i was a nipper it was easy to swap engine and boxes none of those ecu then just distributors with points and cabs if you could shoe horn it into the car it work. rover v8s in everything and jag diffs at the rear. those were the days. now if one sensor gives a reading a couple of volts out the whole car comes to a stop. cheers Chris

i dont think that the v8 explorer is that much faster then the sohc. I have also considered putting a supercharged jag engine in an ex but its just not worth ib because for less money and trouble you could rebuild the 4.0 sohc with preformance parts and supercharger/turbo and really have a beast of a car.

ok dont look like anything is a good swap then and yeah import a v8 one is much better like the 4.0 goings well very well just dont seam to last

OMG we're giving our ages away now arent't we? I'm with Chris on this - the good old days of Pinto - get a Corsair bellhousing and stick an Essex V6 on the front - then watch your fuel tank implode as it's sucked empty!!

But more seriously, some of the Japanese machinery might make a better switch. My Mitsubishi 2.5 24valve V6 developed 161 bhp and drove like a dream. The Explorer gets a pitiful 200bhp from its 4 litres so what's it doign with the rest?

The Mitsi engine is the same as used in the Shoguns and their other off-roaders - even the 3L is the same motor but Chris is right - there's a lot of computer to transplant with anything of that nature unless you fancy going back to carburettors etc. I've seem some nice work done with Toyota hardware too. I know a guy who built a 24V 3L Supra motor onto a Land Cruiser box and running gear. That was manly enough.

A 200TDI? Do you not have enough pain in your life? I know they drove well while they worked but bloody hell, the dealers were breeding the damn things at their height - all parked round the back, all seized on one cylinder. Nuff said!

i have the 5.0 liter back in the usa.its real good.nice sound but i like the 4.0 liter just as good.mines gives good performance and sound.

if u want a beast try the excursion.power stroke diesel.i took it up the highway yesterday and the power was unbelievable.

There was a company in the USA that did a super charger kit specially for the 4.0 sohc.
A chap in Wales was meant to be getting the franchise for selling them this side of the pond.
It was a complete, do it yourself, bolt on kit.
Might be worth doing a google search if anyone was serious.
They did stipulate a maximum milage for the engine to be converted and it was something like an extra 80bhp.

Try looking at the American company called 'EXPLORER EXPRESS' for superchargers. Alot of money though!!!

Hell guys! Superchargers, lump transplants....Ooooo I did all that when I was younger like many of you I am sure- now its just a case of keeping em on the road! Mind you if I had the time and money, I sure would love to turn it into a convertable- that would be freaky cool eh?
