I ordered two from fordpsrtsnetwork and they just don't look right so I was hoping someone would have a pic before I start.

The external part looks exactly like the one on my 1997 AWD Borg Warner 4404. It seems to be missing the gear at the end of it.

I crawled under, those are the right sensors but I can't find the front one yet.

Is it possible that it uses the ABS sensors?

I Don't know what you mean by front sensor, but that is the correct sensor. What that plugs into is the transfercase. The gear for changing the speedo reading is in the transfercase.

I read somewhere that there were two sensors on the transfercase, one by the rear output shaft and one by the front. That must have been for a different case.

OK. I've done a little more reading and I think they did send me the wrong sensors. I believe what I wanted to replace would be the magnet sensors, I think they are called Hall effect sensors.

I think what you are discribing is the sensors for the ABS system, which are on both front hub assemblies, and I think there is one somewhere on the rear axle, but I'm not sure. They monitor the speed of the wheels and when there is a major difference between the front and the rear, the computer will activate the solenoid on the front of the T-case and the truck goes into 4wd. This is "TRAC LOK" .

they are on the rear of my 4405 transfercase. Not the ABS sensors but they work the same way.

Not even close :P

The sensors you are referring to Ray are the ABS sensors and they have nothing to do with your 4-wheel drive. The two for the front wheels and the one on the rear differential monitor the front tire speeds and rear axle speed to determine if they are locking up. If they are, then the ABS kicks in and pulses the brakes.

What checkedout is referring to are the hall-effect sensors. Their are two of them and they are both installed in the transfer case. They monitor the speed of the front and rear driveshafts. If there is a speed difference between them, the 4x4 kicks in and starts sending some fo the torque to the front wheels while taking it away from the rear wheels. They are mounted just above the point where each driveshaft enters the transfer case.

The item shown in the picture at the top is the Vehicle Speed Sensor. It is also mounted to the transfer case when the vehicle is 4x4 and on the transmission tailshaft for 2WDs. It's sole purpose is to measure the vehicles speed for the speedometer, odometer and transmission shift strategy.

Thanks for the correction Robert. :)
I always thought that the ABS sensors whe the ones that did that, but I guess you learn something new everyday. :)

Yeah, the confusing part is most people call the HEF sensors "Speed Sensor" which they technically are. It gets confusing though since there is a Vehicle Speed Sensor. I can understand someone just telling a parts department that they want a speed sensor from the tranfer case on an Explorer. Well which would you like, the HEF or the VSS? If you don't know that there are both, it would be easy to get the wrong one.
