2000 Ford Explorer Sport
Hi guys, just wondered if you could help a girl out . No problems noticed with my explorer sport which has 130000 miles on it, but I am trying to keep it going at least for another couple of years till I finish college . My dad gets me to keep an eye on the car for leaks etc and found nothing but i saw this which looked a bit suspect. Can someone tell me what this part is and what I should do if anything. There is no actual leakage onto the garage floor.
Many Thanks
Lisa

That is the front driveshaft cv joint--

Not to worry much, it will start popping long before it leaves you stranded.

Keep an eye on it--if you must fix, just replace the front driveshaft with a new one, as a used one will probably do this quickly

Thaks for your swift reply, so am I right in saying that there is really nothing to worry about at the moment? Was just wondering why it was so discolored, looked like by oil. What should I look out for, as in problems that will tell me it is failing , leaks etc?
Thanks again
Lisa

That's grease from inside that assembly leaking out. It's not worth repacking with grease because well...it's not something that easily goes back together if taken apart, in fact it doesn't go back together. Like Jt said just leave it be. If you never use 4x4 then you could just take it out if it starts going bad, which is what I did....Well I more left it out because I screwed it up when removing the xfer case.
