so how about it Houston people? I'm forsure going to be out there, watching the action.

What: Super Truck Shootout
When: July 26 & 27, 2003
Where: Jake's Mud Hole ~28408 E. Hardy, Spring Texas 77373

i am doin my best to be there fordlover, but whether or not i register or spectate is still up in the air :(

do you know what kind of events i would be eligible for?
the registration form has a stock class with tires no bigger than 33"

needless to say, their website wasnt very informative.
i wonder if i will be required to have a front towpoint...if i do, i was thinkin my best option is the front hidden hitch.

besides quick-disconnects for my sway bars, what else would i need to enter?

i still have new procomp shocks to install...

any input is greatly appreciated

Most of the guys out there have purpose built rigs, even in the 'stock' class. I'm not going to participate because I don't wanna beat my truck up. The competition should be pretty hard and I wouldn't subject any daily driver to it, unless you know exactly what to expect. (and I don't, this will be my first one to attend)
Not trying to talk you out of doing it if you really want to, but I'd go the first time and check it out, if you wanna do it, sign up for next years event.

Most of the guys that are doing this won't be surprised if they break something, and mine is too close to a daily driver to risk it.
But I'll definitely be out there, and probably do some wheelin' on the side after the events.

Thanks for reminding me about the Super Truck shoot out. I caught a little bit of the action last year.

I'm definitely down for spectating at this event.

BTW, here's my pics from some of the Super Truck Shootout last year:
http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4289559167

The first few pics are of people goofying off at the creek. Then the rest are of trucks doing the obstacle course.

Yeah, I wouldn't subject a daily driver to this contest.

i guess calling it a "stock" class was a lil misleading to me...

will the stock class be nothing but jeeps with 33's?

i was kinda expecting something you could drive a long distance and newer like Xterras or 4runnas, :)

since tearing up my ex is out of the question, i still think i would enjoy watching the other vehicles.

why arent you entering the competition john?

I'm not a Texan, I'm an Iowan, but me and a buddy have a roadtrip planned and marked off in Sept to leave Iowa on the 17th and return home on the 26th. Plan on stopping in Ft. Sill for a day or so and a day or so at Ft. Hood, and the rest of the time in Corpus Christi and would like to meet up with a couple of ya and get a little dirty or just hang out or something. I basicly have a stock explorer. Haven't added any lift yet or anything cool like that, just cosmetic add ons but planning a lift and would like to check out a lifted explorer and ask some questions. Does anyone live around my routes or know of anything cool and fun to do in Texas??

if ur going down to the coast, there is suppose to be a nice beach area only allowed to be used by 4wheeldrives, might want to check it out, suppose to be pretty much, haven't had to time to go check it out though,

don't know where exactly ur located in iowa, but fall and spring, i'm up in kirksville MO, which is about 30 mins south of iowa border on highway 63, could hook up and do some wheeling if u get the X up in the air, good luck and have fun on ur trip,

oh and i think its the 25 or so in illionios, bout and 1.5 away from me at school they have a rock crawling competition that is fun to watch, and can also do some wheeling there, let me know

Basically you've got the right idea. anyone running 33's or smaller means it's gonna be a samuri or some other tiny 4x4, and some jeeps maybe. Don't expect to see anyone with a newer SUV in any of the classes.

Rock: I haven't met up with any of the Texas guys as of yet, but your more than welcome to come out to spring creek and have some fun.. plenty of easy mud for stockers (like my truck) I'm north of Houston.. not sure how your planning on getting to corpus, but if it takes you down Interstate 10 thru houston, your only 30 miles from Spring Creek.(which is north on I-45)

My truck is still pretty much my daily driver. And I've been out of work for over a month, so I really can't be beating the crap out of it for no reason. :D

oh wow, for some reason i thought you were trailering it around with the limited...i've spotted ya once northbound near cornrow.

how is driving the modified sport trac everyday?

is it a lot worse than stock? (regrettably?)

im sure once you leave the paved road, you forget all about it :D

For any long distance trips, I tow it.

My truck rides great. The worst part is that my current tires I've had on for over 2 years and they haven't worn very well. So they are noisy. But, if and when I put brand new ones on it will ride quiet again. Longer wheelbase vehicles like mine always ride better than shorter vehicles.

Hey all. I've been under a rock for the last couple of months and didn't know this tread was still alive.

All you new guys, ain't no shame in wheelin' a stocker! Mine's done just fine. (I just moved my web site to a new server, so this link may not work for a few days.)

http://4x4.light-spark.com

I'm still looking for some good shocks cheap if anyone in the area has some laying around that won't fit your hellaciously lifted trucks.

JPA1982: Ya, that would be cool to hook up with ya and go check out some competitions with ya. I live right by Ames (Iowa State University) but I work in Des Moines. I'd pry be almost too embarresed to show up with my X, I love it and all, but she is still a baby, so I might have to show up with my TA. I haven't really done any offroad with it except corn fields, guess im still a baby in the off-road world too. But your truck is what mine wants to be when it grows up. If I wouldn't have bought the TA, trust me, the X would be sitting up much higher before my road trip to Texas and I would feel a bit more comfortable taking it offroad so I won't break anything underneath. So, now it will be just piece by piece over the winter months, reading through past posts on how to AAL, new shackles, TT, body lift and maybe some new shocks also. I think if I have the help and the tools needed, I will have all that done by Memorial Day weekend for my B-Day. Do you know where any of these locations are that you were talking about?? The beach on the coast and the competitions in IL? I'd like to check them out, sounds sweet.
FordLover: Spring Creek sounds sweet, but a little out of the way on the down to Corpus, I will be coming from Oklahoma. But maybe on the way home we could stop and check it out for a few hours or so, maybe even leave a day early and do some camping or something and meet up with some friends. Camping is always fun.
Well, check ya guys later.

hey rocks,
looks like you've got some very capable tires on your x, and some nice wheels to match.
my question for ya is what sizes are you runnin?
your x looks very low to the ground the the tires look much smaller than mine do on my stock rims. i'll admit that they barely fit.
1/2" clearance when turning the wheel, dont know about any rubbin with a lil flex yet.
its an easy fix with a lil TT and i think i prefer the AAL because i dont like the look and functionality of shackles jutting out too far.
the advantage to the AAL is price, even for me, $30-40 is great.
i figured if im going to go through the trouble of installing them, i might as well put on the double AAL (~$120) and get the extra inch or so out of it.
especially since i dont like the way it looks level, the rear just looks too low.
if i do the TT i would still prefer a slight rake in the stance. i guess i will have to figure all that out when i get there.

the T/A is sweet, but you still have a nice x you could bring, and remember that not all of us texans are as lifted as we would like. :bounce:

haha, well, actually, the tires are smaller than stock...I originally ordered 30x12, but, they were sold out, so I said I'll take the next size down that is available. And they apologized and said they would cover the cost of two of my rims since I bought them all together. Well, I got 27x9.5 and the 4 wheels delivered to my house. But I was stubborn and I really liked the tires, so, they were mounted on the X. Dad took some pictures since I am overseas right now, and it still doesn't look bad at all. But it dropped the X a couple inches unfortunately, so now I am a streeter, haha. I figured as much as I drive, they will last me through fall, winter, and spring and after the the lift, go for some 32's or something and not be too stubborn and search around and sell these if I haven't really driven on them much. And the pics of the TA just don't do the car justice. The pics aren't very good quality. One of my favorite purchases right along with the X. I got my toys now and set to go.

I would love to wheel with you guys and gals, but mine is purely street. Pictures coming soon. But maybe sometime I will get invited by someone and go and pick them up and trailer there rig for them. That way, could have fun. I would love to ride with someone some time and see how much fun it really is to off-road. Then I could make up my mind if I want to buy me a trail rig to play in the mud with.
