I went to the dealer today to look for a 19 tooth speedo gear for my 95 Explorer XLT but they told me they only have the stock 18 tooth or whatever the stock one is. I was advised this gear would calibrate my speedometer correctly to match my 31x10.5x15 tires. I haven't tried calling other dealers yet but I'll get to it eventually. Anyone know where I can get one from?

I went down to the Ford dealer closest to my house and picked it up at the service counter. They had an assortment in stock. If an 18 tooth gear is all the place you went to stocks, then they are either a very small dealer or don't have much of a selection. I would try another dealer. The one you went to can order it for you though.

My new rim/tire combo is about 1 inch smaller than stock, what kind of speedo gear would I need? Are they hard to install?

Get a new dealer. That parts guy didnt know what he was doing. There is nos cuh thing as a "Stock" speedo gear for all Explorer's.

The 18 tooth may be the most common, but it is not stock...most Explorer's came with 3.73's but some had 3..5's and some had 4.10's without even being ordered so obviously they came with different speedo gears. Any dealer parts dept worh ta grain of salt will have a selection on hand.

Its is possible the person behind teh counter thought you wanted the "drive" gear.. you don't.. you want the driven gear..

There are many stock ones.. one for each gear ratio they sell (and I think there are even more than that).
