I was wondering if anyone has a transmission cooler on their Explorer that isn't stock. I want one to keep my transmission cool, maybe one that will keep it cooler than the one I have already on there. If anyone can give me any info, it'd be nice. Thank you

I'm joining this thread because I'm considering the Tru-Cool Max (which is rated at 40,000 pounds of gross vehicle weight...overkill by about seven times). It was developed for situations where the cooler in the radiator is contaminated, or for heavy duty diesel applications. It runs over $100 (but is 2x as much cooling as others that cost half as much), but it is cheap insurance IMO. It has a thermal bypass valve which lets fluid bypass the cooler until it reaches operating temperature. I'm planning on running synthetic fluid, so overcooling won't be a big issue for me, but it could help in cold climates for people running petroleum based fluids.

I was thinking that if a target temperature for the fluid is about 130*F, why risk heating it up by having it go through the radiator (thermostat setting of 195*F)? I was also thinking that keeping the transmission fluid out of the radiator eliminates the potential for cross-contamination and won't kill the tranny if the radiator ever blows out and overheats.

I haven't done this yet, but I'm interested in other's experiences.

I have been looking into doign the electric fan, bigger tranny cooler and filter setup for some time now. I have been seaching for the right combo I want for my tranny. There is another thread on tranny coolers and filters on here but i dotn have the link at thise time.

Drew- you ever down in fredericksburg?

The factory cooler does a great job, even towing the Jeep. I added anothe in addition to the factory one and the combo of the two doesn't do much more than just the stock one. That is based on monotoring the actual tranny temp.

I have a secondary trany cooler ( B&M ) the quality of that cooler is out stading.
I also am running a Perma-Cool filter guage combo.
I am quite happy with the performance of all these products.
The only issue is in the winter my guage does not register since it starts at 140.
Which really is not an issue, since if the tranny is over heating, it should move eventually.

It was a easy instal for me. Bracket fabracation was the only real challange.

What cooler do you have exactly and where did you get it and how did you set it up?

boominXplorer - No, not too much. I've been there before for baseball and such, but it's sort of a long drive for me.

Aldive - I've sent you a PM about the a-pillar pod...please respond to me about that. I'm extremely intersted in it

I have the B&M cooler and perma-cool filter with almost the same exact setup as MONMIX. I just don't have the factory aux. cooler. I've seen my trans temp spike to 195*. I'm thinking of adding another cooler next summer.

yep 1 factory and 2 aftermarkets

I got mine from Dakota Digital, as I have alrady answered.

I also have a B&M tranny cooler. I also installed an auxillary oil cooler.

Aldive - Well in my PM I basically asked you where exactly is there one on the site for an Explorer? I seen Rangers, but not Explorers. Thanks

I put a Flex-A-Lite Cooler in my X in addition to the factory cooler. Got it from Dead Link Removed . Part # is FLX-4118. Installation is easy, and it works very well.

Do you happen to know how cool your transmission fluid stays? 175? Lower?

-Drew

Autometer makes an A-pillar pod for the Explorer. I'm not sure of the part #, but it's on their website. Smmit and Jeg's both carry it, I believe. Here it is:

Dunno the actual temp, but I'd bet on under 175. I can touch the lines and not get burned after running all day.

Mine normally runs anywhere from 125*-180*. Autometer also make a pod that stadles the steering column.

I stole that picture from DocVijay. Oh wait, that's me. JK.

It's from Autometer. Like I said, I'm not sure the exact part #, but it's listed as an Explorer part. It only comes in black, but I sprayed it with Dupli-Color Medium Gray, and it matched perfectly. It attaches to the A-pillar using 4 plastic screws, and is pretty sturdy. just drill a couple of decent sized holes in the A-pillar and you're all set. Easy.

EDIT (see above post): Oh, there you go. Jeg's part # 105-15308, for $27.99. Just go to your local auto parts store and pick up the Dupli-Color and you're almost done.
