2010 with 4.0l v6. 100k miles. This weekend when I was camping, it decided to not start when I was 15 miles back into the statelands without cell service.

I'd put the key in, turn it to ON, it dings and does normal routine including the securilock indicator light glowing red for 3 seconds (per owners manual) and then turning off. Turn the key to start, nothing. Then all electronics are dead for 5 minutes or so including the securilock light.

After 2 more attempts it starts. Get back to campground, does it again. This time, the indicator light never comes back on and electeonics are never restored. Let it sit overnight. Next morning, same ****. I unhooked the battery and reconnected and it fired up.

Ford dealer I called said its probably not the key since the indicator showed that it recognized it.

My question: I live in a small town and I'm not worried about theft. Can I just permanently disable this piece if **** system?

If not, any ideas of the culprit? Having this **** happen in remote areas makes this "explorer" only useful for city driving.

I dont think it was a securilock thing. I would worry about the electronics dying for 5 min. That's not supposed to happen. I dropped my key once and it popped apart and the little security module popped out and I didn't notice (I have the keys with fobs built in). I put the key back together and the explorer wouldn't start, lights/electronics came on but no start. I finally went back out and searched and fond the little security chip and put it back in the key and it started no problem. At no time was there any "waiting period" nor did the electronics turn off. It just wouldn't even turn over.

I'll have to double check, but I thought the owners manual said their was a period you have to wait. Could be wrong.

My key chip is only in the key and not the fob. Has a separate cheap fab exactly like the one on my 04 f150.

The light did everything it was supposed to according to the owners manual, so the dealer didn't thibk it was the key.

One thing I forgot to mention, when I disconnected the battery to reset it, the negative terminal was slightly loose. The nut wasn't even finger tight. Maybe that was part of the problem? The negative terminal was also warm after sitting off for 8 hours.

yea, I would say the negative terminal being loose is way more likely to be the problem than the key.
When I bought mine it had a normal key and separate fob as well. I bought the fobkeys off ebay and had them programmed.

I second the negative terminal. Bad condition can cause all sorts of problems
