This weekend really sucked for my X! decided to change my front brakes as they were degraded horribly, so I bought new rotors, calipers, master cylinder and pads. The repair went without a hitch and the bleeding was done on all four wheels. I even intentionally changed the color of the brake fluid so I could notice when all used fluid was gone. Soooo, when I finished I took it around the block and it drove around just perfect...but my stupid check rear antilock brake light activated as did my parking brake light. We checked the computer and it gave me the code 5..1..1.. which indicated a RAM error- my Apten was fried. In the past six months, my engine has been pinging like a son of a gun and been getting about 3 mpg lower than usual (it usally gets about 20 mpg). I took the chip out and I'm back to 20.2 mpg and no knocking, but the brake light is still on. No computer codes, just the light, any suggestions? The lines were all re-bled and everything was checked out, but why would the rear brakes have changed, they weren't even touched?
Just FYI, when I went up to the lake with my girl, the front brakes smoked quite a bit going down hill but my dad and I both think it was just the residual oil from the machining process, hasn't smoked since. WHen I came back to my house my front rotor temperature was about 200 degrees F...is that high? Thanks all!

If you bled the rear brakes then you need to also bleed the RABS valve........

the code 511 is normal when you have a chip in.

What gas grade were you running with the chip when you were getting pinging?

also if you get pinging when running the right gas grade, it's a good idea to try cleaning the MAF Sensor.

Rear ABS valve??? I know I sound stupid when I ask this but what and where is that?? If that's all it is then I'll be very happy.
BJ- So 511 is normal...oops:D . My MAF is about 7 months old and the knocking began again about 6 months ago, granted the temperature has increased. However my engine even knocks in the morning when it is cool...I only used premium gas also. What I'm thinking is that maybe my chip was fried when my car had to be repainted after my accident, that's about when it started. Perhaps the paint baking process cooked the chip...
I'll check out the RABS valve- thanks guys!

the chip will give more timing advance, so if your truck is running a little lean, the chip will show it by causing pinging.

If the pinging started around a month after a new MAF, that's the first place I would be checking. You could also check to make sure there are no intake leaks, and that your O2 sensors, ECT, and IAT sensors are all functining properly.

are you running premium gas too?

If you think the chip is bad, send it to us and we'll test it out. They do have a lifetime warranty.

Damn good service BJ! Like you said, I'm in the process of testing various components. I just replaced my O2 sensor but the knocking is still there with the chip. It's definitely not the MAF because I swapped it with my brother's 92 and mine knocks with his in spite of the fact that his knocks with neither. I'm going to continue to check it out and see what's going on. Thanks bj!
