We're comparing apples to oranges here. I've got a 5.0. Lots of people do lots of crazy things with the 5.0 but that wouldn't help you. All I have is stock stuff so far except a ported/polished OEM TB, aftermarket intake, new exhaust. I've also got some SCT tuning tying it all together. I'm looking at some aftermarket headers (Torque Monster, only available for 5.0). Others have supercharged their 5.0s, new cams and the like. As before, none of this helps you because you have a different application. You're better off seeing what other people are doing with their 4.6L in 3rd Gen Explorers (post 2003-2005). There's one guy who's shooting for 600 HP or something insane like that. Can't remember his userID, but his is black and supercharged and it's definitely 3rd gen.
EDIT: Rocket dude just responded to you. He's the one with the smokin' fast 3rd gen.
You might be able to fab the Saleen supercharger on there thats out for the 3V Mustangs. I would have to take a look at your heads and get a part # off them to really make sure they are the same. Kenne Bell makes a 2.4 supercharger kit for the 3v Mustangs too now. Either way it would all be a custom job with lots of types of fabbing involved. But it is doable. If you want a fun project then go for it. Fabbing a custom centrifugal supercharger kit on there would be easier though, FYI. Just bracketry and tubing for the centri's.
Besides the big stuff an intake and exhaust with a tune is always a good start. Have the exhaust custom made from a local/reputable/confident exhaust shop. Shouldn't cost much more than roughly $600 depending on what setup your going for. The 05 intakes may be a fit for your Explorer, you would have to try it out I guess. If not, I am working on a custom intake for my 2005 Lincoln LS which uses the same type of MAS element that the 05+ Mustangs and 04+ Explorers use. I might be able to work something out with you for a custom deal for an intake as long as I get some detailed measurements from you. As for the tune, just go with one from an SCT dealer using an Xcal2. All that should give your Ex a pretty respectable kick in the pants.
