Are Explorer auto trannys bad?

Tranny

I thought I lost mine @ 171,000 miles. Changed the filter and fluid, and that solved my problem. I had no reverse, and a hard time starting out in first, found filter was tore and a piece sucked up into valve body. I've had two s series blazers and both 700r4's went out. I think the ford trans definitely shift smoother, I do wonder about the converter it doesn't seem like it locks up right.

a guy i know told me to put lucas oil stabalizer in the tranny and he swears that his TC feels tighter. i have not tried this but am thinking about it as the TC is like mush. slips like a greased pig ina bath tub.

I have oftened hoped we would have more qualified tranny techs respond/participate on this forum. It would sure be a help to us all. Guess they are just a few of them around, compared to engine, suspension and other component techs. From what I read, heat, infreqent fluid changes and abuse are a tranny's worse enemies. There are no internal combustion by products in a transmission, compared to an engine. Not sure about any internal wear maintenance adjustments...perhaps there are not any on modern transmissions. Any comments from a tranny tech? Thanks Mike

My explorer is at about 135,400 miles and I got a lead foot. Minor dripping from the tranny but no problems.
