Are our Explorers 7.5 or 8.8 axle?

I have a 1998 Sport OHV and I believe my rear gear is 3.27. But I don't know is it a 7.5 or 8.8. I want to do a swap for a 4.10 and I don't know where to start.

Please recommend.

it is an 8.8 for sure... people that you'll buy gears from should know what diff you have... unless you're buying privatelly.... as long as the gears are from a Ford 8.8 rear differential with 31 splines they will work...

(if you want to add a locker you must check if your rear end is open or has LS).

BTW.... did Sports in 1998 come with different differentials??? the one in my SOHC is a 4.10 LS...

I don't know that for sure. My Explorer Sport is a basic model. 3.27 rear gear 2wd.

Does all Ford 8.8 gear will fit a 28 or 31 spline?
