Doesn't really matter to me. I would like to try Raw deal though. Also how hard is Raw deal I have never seen that one. Is it lockers manadory or what Just curious. I can meet everyone if Flag if neccesary as long as where you camp out at the cinders is not to far off the main road going in.

I'm planning on taking some vacation before and after (heading to north rim of the grand canyon, and then upto bodie, hwy 395 to hwy50, back home, or in reverse.. not sure yet..)

I'd like to see rawdeal, and do some rock crawling.

So, let's see..

Friday - raw deal
Saturday - cinders
Sunday - BBQ'ing in pheonix
Monday - head home. :-)

just a suggestion!

I guess my question is: is there enough wheeling at cinders for 2 days? Saturday is good for the cinders and sunday for the BBQ. I don't know if i can get away on Friday -day time. I don't care about when Raw Deal is done b/c I cant do it anyway.

One day at the Cinders would be fine with me. You can do a lot in one day.

Friday - Rock Crawling North of New River, AZ
Saturday - Cinders, Flagstaff, AZ
Sunday - BBQ Rick & Char's Phoenix, AZ

New River AZ

Rick,

Re: Rock Crawling at Mew River: I'm Game, but where exactly is it, and what accomodations would be nearby, etc., or would we just stay O/N in Flagstaff for that run too? We plan to travel on Thursday, arriving in Flagstaff Fri AM.

Ray, The nearest hotels to the rockcrawling area are in North Phoenix, near our house (20min). Flagstaff is 1-1/2hrs North.

Would it be better to rock crawl on Sunday before the BBQ? The logistics of doing New River on Fri, Cinders Sat, and back to Phoenix on Sunday may not work out well for some of you who are traveling in.

Crawling

Rick,

I seems like a reverse order (Cinders, New River, then Phoenix/BBQ) probably would work better for us, as we'll likely come on into Flagstaff via the 40 on Thursday / Friday. But we'll go with whatever seems to work for the majority.

I vote for rock crawl on Sunday. I won't get into AZ till Saturday afternoon.

One more thing about the rock crawl. It is going to be plenty hot. Probably right around 100. The Raw Deal trail probably only takes 1-2hrs though. If you want more there is more in the area.

Bring plenty of water!

I might not be able to make it since I will be starting a job the monday before the weekend. If I endup making it I like the idea of the crawling sunday cause I can leave early enough Sunday to be back to San Diegoto go to work monday morning.

Matt

So it sounds like:

Friday night - show up in Flagstaff
Saturday - Cinders
Sunday morning - rock crawl on the way down to phoenix
sunday afternoon - finish trails, head down
sunday night - Toga Party at ricks!
monday - head home

uhm, oh, wait, that's BBQ at ricks. :-)

Toga, Toga, Toga!

Can anyone leave (from Phx or Southern AZ) for Flagstaff sometime on Friday?? It would be cool if we could caravan.

Reservations, etc

Rick,
Let's see if we got this right. We're planning to leave DP on Thursday Morning, and arrive in Flagstaff on Friday Morning (8th). I booked a room at the Best Western-Pony Soldier, on Route 66, East Side of town. Booked 2 nites, Fri. (8th) and Sat. (9th), and thern were dropping down to New River Sunday Morning, then to Phoenix in the PM for BBQ? Also is the route in your'e planning to use via Trails End and the "Cinders Haul Road"? According to Map Blaster, there's also a "Back Way" Via East Empire and Dodge Aves. to the other fork of the haul road.

I suggest that we get back to Phoenix Saturday night. We need an early start at the rock crawling on Sunday, 'cause it's going to be hot in the desert. There are some hotels near our house right off the freeway. I'll have to have Char post the names, she's not here now. If you prefer to stay in Flag that's fine just take into account the 2hr drive to get to the trail in the morning.

What time do you plan on arriving in Flag on Friday? I'll be sure to meet you there.

How about everyone else? Will you be arriving in Flag on Friday or Saturday? If Saturday please be ready to hit the trail by 9am.

Never heard of any of those roads. I will post directions to the meeting spot soon. We don't go through the access gate like that article described. We enter on a forest road that takes you right too the OHV area.

Arriva Flagstaff etc.

Rick,

We'll likely ON in Laughlin (cheap rooms) or Kingman. Since the AAA maps say its about 4hrs, we should easliy be in Falg by noon. We can easily cancel the Sat nite reser., and head South with the group. Also we need to pick Radio frequencies soon. What do you know about the several Flagstaff area 2m or 440 repeaters? I may be all wet about my route...I dangerously assumed that the road labled "Cinders Haul Rd. would be the way in.:o

They mine cinders up there to use for cinderblock, asphalt, decorative landscape, etc. Cinder Haul Rd. may be jsut that a road for hauling cinders for the mining operations.

146.52 Will work for us once we get local. It's been a long time since I've used any local repeaters. In your repeater guide look for repeaters on Mt. Elden, that's the closest to where we'll be.

Drinking Water for Raw Deal

Recommendations for drinking water. In the desert the rule of thumb is 2 gals. per person per day.

This is not a joke. If you are not used to the desert you'll dehydrate very fast. You must drink water, even if you don't feel thirsty. That's the trick the desert plays. You don't really feel thirsty, but then you get home after the trail and find out you are dehydrated. DRINK, DRINK AND DRINK!!!
