Of course the left brake light is now out.

Here's the 2 second story.

Just bought a 2001 Explorer Sport stock from a small local dealer. Has 165k miles, I am no mechanic but engine ran like a sewing machine. To be honest, I did not observe the tail lights. I did spot the loose horn cover and no horn and asked for that to be fixed. No more loose cover and loud horn.

I noticed the tail light out tonight and my fiance's son replaced it. He is a good mechanic and said the problem was in the wiring.

I know of a mechanic shop and will take it in, my question here is could the problems be related? Thanks for any ideas for this 1st time ES owner.

check the fuses. the sounds of it was that they where in the column which contains your multifunction switch. aka blinker switch. may be a bad wire in that area. i would try and see if the dealer would fix it due to it being a safty issue. as i assume you bought it as is no warranty. These dealers (including myself) have to make sure the car stops, all lights work, horn works, and safety belts work. along with a couple other things. when you bought that you bought it as a safe to drive vehicle. use that to our advantage. if you need any help pinpointing the concern after that message me and i will go over the diag. pinpoint with you

These trucks also have a known issue with binding wires in the multi function switch (MFS) connector.

If you have a tilting wheel, cycle it up and down a couple times ending in the UP position. Keep posted.

For future, cycle the tilt on steering once a month. This will lubricate some components related to the starting switch and might avoid a big headache latter.

Appreciate the replies. At a mechanic shop around corner that does other shops electrical issues. Truck is torn apart on inside, still haven't found exact area where short is, told them about the mfs issue. Big bill coming my way. Feeling a little like a rube at the moment.

Amazing, work done tracing short, including replacing a wiring harness, panels removed, all put back together right, total charge $179. Glad I didn't buy a Land Rover and run into a similar situation. Thanks to all.
