Ok, i have been reading and reading and i am as lost as when i started. I know this is like beating dead horse but how do i do this?? My biggest problems is how to run the wires, i guess i would get my power from my overhead console but how do i get the wires down under the dash with out them showing. I have read that if i hook up the mirror to the right wire under the dash on the left side in that bundle of wires it will turn my headlights on and off without doing anything else. If i hook this up will it make my manual control for the lights usless? Then i guess i would run the other wire to the cig lighter to get my constant power to have the delay feature work. Is this right or am i missing something? I just don't wanna mess anything up. I have printed stuff out to let me know which color wire goes where. What does tapping mean? all those kinda questions. thanks

It looks like wired_af has answered pretty much all your questions so I'll answer the last remaining one.
Tapping means connecting to or splicing into. Basically you are "tapping" power from one wire or connection to another wire.

heres the schematic
autodim.jpg

Basically you connect the black wire to ground. white/purple wire to the park lamp relay. black/pink wire to reverse lights. red/yellow to switched power. and red/white to power at all times
BIG COUNTRY goes into more details about this here: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84968
the easy way to wire tap is to buy these:

ok
So when i get the wires hooked up in my overhead console then i would run the wires overtop the headliner? how would i go about doing that. Then it would go through the A piller? does it matter which side you bring the wires down. does the piller come off or pull away? then i guess theres a place to take the wires all the way down under the dash. Could i just run the BK/PK wire to the transmission range selector? and it would do the same thing instead of running it all the way to the rear of the car?

thanks for all the help

Yup over the head liner (i think, i have never ran wires up there)

just bring the wires down the passanger side A piller, because i think thats where the wires for the overhead console go. the plastic should just pull off the A piller, play around with it, it will come off.

yes running the black/pink wire from the mirrow to the bk/pk wire from the tans. selector will work

run your wires thru the headliner and down the A pillar and hook up your red/white and yellow/green wire to the fuse panel...that way it is hooked up just like it came out of the factory...plus you got it to the right fuses, do not hook it up to your cigar lighter that is to much amperage for it and you could possibly fry your wires and or damage your mirror's circuit board...do not do that...follow my instructions and you will be alrights.

ahh
i just pulled off the overhead console and i don't recognize any of the color wires!!!!!!! how would i know which one is the one that is hot when the car is on? i have a green/orange coming from the passenger side and about 7 coming from the drivers side. please help

Billabong, run your wires like I explained in my thread..."THIS IS HOW TO INSTALL AN AUTO DIMMING/ AUTO LAMP REAR VIEW MIRROR". It is the thread that wierd_af underlined.

5 wires

white/purple: wire it to the park lamp relay located behind the dash by the gas pedal, you will see a black box...open it up and if you look at it with the big relay on your left, the park lamp relay will be the second small relay on the bottom...splice it into the white/purple wire coming off of pin 2...this wire is for your autolamps to have your headlights to stay on when you turn your vehicle off...

black: wire it to any ground

black/pink: wire it to your reverse lights, this wire cancels out the autodimming when you put it in reverse

light green/yellow: hot at ignition, wire it to pin 36 on your interior fuse panel, there will be a light green/yellow wire

red/white: hot at all times, wire it to pin 11 on your interior fuse panel, there will be a red/white wire

follow this and you are set...dont do it to your overhead console, you will still have to wire the reverse light wire and park lamp relay wire...
