Ive searched for this issue previously but couldnt find anything and any thread that pertained to this topic always came up inconclusive.

My problem is that the green led on the mirror comes on, but my autolamps dont work. I can still turn the headlights on by the switch with no problems. Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Do the autolamps run through the GEM?

A defective light sensor on the windshield side of the mirror would be my only guess, though I've never heard of one going south before. You should be able to pick a mirror assembly up at the boneyard for next to nothing.

Mine also does the same thing, I traced it to a relay located inside the GEM, but without a new GEM I cannot confirm 100% if that is infact the issue.

Does your mirror have the slide switch?

Make sure the switch is not in the OFF position.

I'm sure you've checked this, but lets start with the basics.

Yes the mirror has the slide switch, its a 99.

Will a gem from any model trim Explorer be okay or do I need to pull on from a Limited?

Try spraying some electrical contact cleaner in the slide switch on the mirror and moving it back and forth a few times. Good luck.

Not sure if it needs to be the exact base level vehicle, but you need to match the part numbers so that everything works. Last time I checked it was about $400+ toget one from Ford…
