Its probable that its the hub. Manuals are a very good investment either way.

All the Explorers I've ever had (they all had automatic hubs) they pop, clunk, bang and carry on when you engage them when the get a little older.

my hubs always bang when i engage while moving. Shift on the Fly.. ha, i always stop when i engage, then just let out on the gas and let everything engage smoothly. youll save your auto hubs by takin the extra 30 secs to stop and engage.

Well, normally, at low speed they should just "click" when they engage. At higher speeds, they go "ka-thump". When my driver's side auto hub failed, it went "BANG", not just when engaging, but also periodically while driving, and the front suspension and steering wheel would shudder constantly. Probably one hub was engaging and the other wasn't.

I converted to manual hubs about 2 months ago. Problem solved.

good advice...thanks

Auto hubs forever! I've serviced mine though, and I won't engage the transfer case with the hubs engaged already at over 25 mph, and won't engage when the hubs are not engaged at over 15.

do your bang at all??

I serviced my autohubs as well-- I took them apart, replaced the internal bearing and cleaned everything up. Yes they bang somewhat when engaging. I try to engage while the truck is coasting instead of under load, but have engaged at up to 45 MPH without a problem.

I'll admit I don't care if I blow one, I have two extras in case.

Auto hubs

Well, my driver's side hub had been acting up for years. Sometimes it would not fully disengage and make a nasty ratcheting sound. Sometimes it would not fully engage; then the steering wheel would wobble. Shortly before I replaced the hubs with manual ones, the hub would spontaneously engage while I made turns. I may have damaged it last winter when I had to rock the Ex back and forth while trying to get off a snow berm where I got hung up while playing  .

Yes, the manual hubs are less convenient, but when they are unlocked they stay unlocked, and when I lock them, I know they will stay locked.

I may have damaged my hubs also because they were working absolutely perfect and now the drivers side bangs sometimes more than other times. I think it was from being on ice and I didn't know the rears were slipping and I engaged the 4h and heard a little thump but since then it has gotten a little worse and then it gets a little better and it is back and forth sometimes it's quiet sometimes it bangs...I should service them but I have just bought this rig and I am very new to this hub business so I don't want to screw anything up..I will wait till summer when I am not pressured by the cold to put it back together and that way I can make sure I do the job right....sound good???

Sounds like a good plan. Spring is here, so now you can work on it a bit. Some guys have had success just by removing the hub assembly and pouring ATF or gear oul into it, leting it soak and then pouring out the excess. I tried this and it stopped the hub from spontaneously engaging while I was driving (most disconcerting when making turns), but did not solve the banging and shaking when I tried to engage 4WD.

At the end of November, I did the manual hub conversion. I'm pleased to report that after the conversion, 4WD worked flawlessly throughout the winter. Not as convenient as auto hubs, but well worth it for the peace of mind.

There is an excellent replacement instruction with photos on http://therangerstation.com. Also, the instructions that come with the WARN kit are thorough and easy to follow.

Aaaah. Now I know why you don't want to go wheelin! Are you sure it is not just your radius arm bushing clunking when you engage 4x4? I' never owned outo hubs so I have no idea. I've got a little shop and lots of tools if you need a hand. Stay in touch.
Peace :smoke:

I'll be there as soon as I can get rid of working all this overtime...I'll start with taking the hub apart and cleaning it, see if that works. I want to get used to the hubs before I start demo-ing everything. Thanks Fallsguy
