How do you know when the auto hubs are going bad ? Mine are making a clunking sound when i drive is that a sign of them going bad or is that normal.

Its a sign of them going bad. Replace them with manual hubs.
 






Can a 97 be changed to manual hubs? I thought it was only the 91-94's.
 






I thought you could but now that you mention it i cant say for sure. Well let an EF expert chime in here.
 






I don't know either. I'm just going by the manual hubs listings that I read before when I was going to buy mine. They only list the 91-94's.
 






don't all 95+ have live axles (always locked)
 






Correct, '95+ Explorers don't have a mechanism for disconnecting the wheel and axleshaft.
 






If it only does it in 4WH, then either a problem with the front axle CV's or, less likely, a differential problem.
 






sorry i forgot to metion that i have control trac, so it does it when in auto not sure about 4h,4L I'll try and see what happens
