Hey Guys! I just went to start up my Explorer and it started just fine. I was testing the 4WD to make sure it was working correctly. It went into 4x4, but would not go into Low Range. I shifted into netural like it told me to and it still would not go in to low range. I jigled the fuse and rocked the car back and forth and then it went in to low range. Is this something wrong with the 4wd system? It was 20 degrees outside so I do not know.

Sometimes when I switch into 4hi or 4lo i have to roll the truck forward or backwards, this probably isn't good for it, but ill go into drive and let it go about 5mph and then go into neutral and switch into 4hi/lo

theres your problem. and it has nothing to do with the hubs. most likely the shift motor, and in some cases maybe the 4x4 shift computer in the back. its located where the rear washer fluid and the jack is in the rear drivers side pannel. its a black or gray box. how often do you use your 4x4?

I use it when our dogs run off and when I go down and fill up the gas tank because it is really muddy down in the shed. It worked fine in the summer, but when it got cold, it started acting up. I really don't use it all the time. Maybe once every 2 weeks.

mmmm.....
its prob just the cold. could just be some ice or somethin in or around the motor...? if you have access to a garage then maybe a motor rebuild or new one is in order.
after all the truck is nearly 18 years old.

Hi:

When is the last time you were in 4 low? How about if you let the x warm up before trying to shift. This is not required but on my 93 it will not shift until there is heat in the cab. This could be a contact problem in the buttons. You should be able to **** into 4H and 4L without the engine running. Makes it easier to here clicks. Have you listened for the audible clicking by the controller (located next to jack)? If it clicks when buttons are pushed the problem is probably in shift motor. If no click then problem is in controller or buttons. I Have also seen where buttons need to be pushed for like 30 sec before they work indicating a possible button problem as well. Cold is not really an issue if contact is being made.

I use low range often. When I 'm in just 4wd, I can not tell if it working or not. But when I am in low range, I can fell it pulling. Also, When the 4wd does not work, the little red dot glows dimmly while you are pushing the button. I think it is the switch.

Hi:

Are you saying that the problem is only noticeable when you try 4lo? A rough test for when 4wd is active is to turn sharp (right or left) and with 4wd engaged and front hubs engaged you will feel the front wheels hop because of the front u joints.

When the dash lights are dim listen or get someone to push while you listen to the controller located where the rear washer fluid and the jack is in the rear drivers side panel. If the controller is clicking then the dash buttons are working but the shift motor is not. (Shift motor is an easy fix.) If the controller does not click then there is a problem between the buttons and the controller.

In either case there a several good write ups on the board for replacing the controller of repairing the shift motor. Just search and you will find tons of information.
