Hey guys. My transmission is acting up and I am seriously considering converting it to a 5 speed. I have some questions about doing it.

1. Will the driveshaft be long enough to connect to the 5 speed? (Are the transmissions the same lengh)

2. Can you use the old computer with the transmission? And if you can't, how much does it cost to buy a new one?

3. Over all is it worth the time and money to convert it?

Thanks!!!

Search junkyards for the pedals, flywheel, clutch hydraulics... etc

If you find a sport model a lot of them were 5 speeds.

I would def try to find good used parts. The only drawback is 91-92 is a different hydraulic setup from the 93-97 setup. If you pull from a 93-up clutch get everything you can. Look for a ranger if x's are in short supply in your local boneyard.

will ford bronco II parts fit for my explorer? flywheel, shifter, pedals, ect.

Well seeing the difference in price... I'd go for the reman trans....

http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi

Used prices run from next to nothin to $700....

How close are you to a Pull-a-part? There are 3 in TN.... Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville..... they have THE BEST prices as far as junkyards go.
you could prob get everything you need from them for less than the cost of the re-man tranny your lookin at.

No need for a new computer. You don't even need to splice into the current one. All that's going to happen is the computer is going to get confused on why there's no 3-4 shift solenoid action and no overdrive lockout, or something along those lines.

I bought my exploder with a broken A4LD, and put in what was my spare M5OD, and I am plenty happy with it.

The closest pull a part is an hour away. And if i find a better price there i will go for that trans but if not, i will go for reman trans. But it would be a better deal if i can get most of the parts i need off pull a part..... so yeah i plan on doing this swap this fall and when i get more money :)

Also don't forget to check craigslist. These first gens go pretty cheap. If you can find one being parted out that may be an option, or you may be able to find one for under the price of a reman trans. This will give you a bunch of spare parts for the future, or you can sell them off and make some of your money back.

I have checked craigslist and ebay but the ones that are being [parted out are automatics. i rarely see a 5 speed

it only cost me ~300 to do my full swap im vegas
tranis are 160
clutch with flywheel 75
hydrolics 15
pedles 10
computer 25
driveshaft modded there unsure which it was alum and i think off a 2 dr auto and put a 5 speed yoke 25
hell while i was there got my 3L73 for 30
the hardest part for me was getting the trani imput shaft in then the next mess was the color coded lines i got my green hose from a 2002 ranger and used brass compression fittings since the green end i found was cut and didnt wanna spend 120 at autozone

and i didnt remove my motor hehehe all this hell for 4 days was due to some ###**** redneck i bought the truck from replaced the auto and didnt tighten a single bolt literally hand tight from the torque converter to the driveshaft yoke made the flex plate explode lol sorry for the book

Like he said there aren't too many 5 speeds being sold in TN, even a majority of the rangers are automatics.
