okay, with the coming of winter weather, i want reliability more than ease, although i would like both!!

anyway, i am planning to switching the auto hubs in my 94 Explorer Sport to manual ones... this is after reading all the post and suggestions of boyfriend and others to switch to manual ones...

in the beginning, i had nothing but problems with the auto hubs... this was a used explorer... one side has been replaced and worked on at least 3 times... the last time i engaged the hub the explorer pulled the right hard and made nasty noises... since then we haven't touched it... well now we are going to change to manuals unless someone can think of something else to check...

well, i guess i am wondering how hard is it going to be to switch the hubs to manual? are there any suggestions that anyone can make to make the switch easier on me? i am planning on ordering the parts this week and switching this weekend! i just got new shocks (edelbrock ias) done this weekend!!! i love them and love my explorer...

well this fragmented post is over i guess... any suggestion or comments please post them!

I am not to sure if you know what you are going to get but I had had the same troubles with my explorer. I went with the "Warn" hubs. Warn makes a great hub! I picked up the set of hubs and the kit to make the switch for about $200. It was pretty easy to do but took a little time. The kit comes full with instructions on how how to get the job done. You can some more info on these at WWW.Warn.com They also have a spot to contact them on the site. I had emailed them and they replied in a day with what I needed, how much it was going to cost, and the site of my local Warn dealer. Hope this helps you!

Do a search for "Warn", "Manual Hubs", "Hubs", etc. There have been a lot of discussions on this topic and there were some with tips and descriptions of the tools needed for the job. Two special sockets needed, one to get the auto spindle nut off and one to get the manual spindle nut on.

Good choice switching over to manual hubs. You may also want to inspect the brakes (pads/rotors/calipers), the bearings/race at the same time, while you have the wheels out, replace them if necessary. Not much more effort because you have to remove them all to make the conversion anyway.

we have the socket needed to take the auto hub completely off, since we change one of the rotors this summer... and we have another ford that we have the socket for the manual... so, i don't think sockets are going to hold us up... i just thought someone might have some suggestions to make it a little easier...

the shocks were changed this weekend to edelbrocks... and the pads and rotors look good... calipers? bearings/race? i'll have to read my book again and make sure to check these... i am getting the Warn manual hubs and adaptor/conversion kit ($213 + tax) but it doesn't come with wheel bearings so i will definitely have to check the ones that are in there out... replacement of those are running $35-$40 do those prices sound right? There are only two MAYBE 3 reliable stores around here to get these from... all have the same prices... we don't go shop at advanced auto anymore due to tooooooo MANY mistakes by the staff... and pepboys is EXPENISIVE...

anyway... i AM going to go with manuals eventhough auto would be easier to engage... i'll live with that for reliability!!!

Those prices sound about average.....I got my hubs for the same price you did. I love them and they haven't let me down and I don't think they will. they are great hubs.

May be I was a little unclear but the bearings/race are not part of the hub conversion. I just mentioned it because it is easily inspected for wear and tear.

You might want to check out Clemson 4-wheel drive center for their prices on the conversion! The manual hubs and conversion kit for my '92 was a total of $169.50 plus shipping (which was about $6.00 in my case). You could e-mail them get a price for yours, it's probably the same... They are a Warn dealer & service center and great to deal with. Go to www.clemson4wheel.com to get their e-mail link - who knows, might save $30 or $40.
