has anyone done a conversion form an automatic to the 5 speed manual tranny? i cant really find anything in the search on it and i was wondering if it worth the hassle. i got qouted $1300 for a rebuilt automatic and i though that was a little pricy, plus i would much rather have a manual. if anyone has done this please lt me know if it is worth it and what changes you had to make.

I have done 3 of them in the last year. You will probably spend about $1,000 in parts for the swap and even more if you can't do the swap.

You will need the following parts:
- M50D-R1 transmission (4wd or 2wd depending on what you have now)
- 4.0 Flywheel (buy a new one, they are only $65)
- Flywheel and pressure plate bolts
- 4.0 Clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder; you DO NOT want a used slave cylinder)
- 4.0 Manual transmission starter
- clutch and brake pedal assembly
- Clutch master cylinder
- Clutch hydraulic line
- Clutch Pedal Position Switch (CPP)
- Steering column
- floor plate
- shifter boot and trim

That is the majority of the parts. I have done all 3 of the swaps I have done for less than $1,000 but I looked around to find deals on the parts.

What about the computer? Will the same computer work for both applications (automatic and manual)

Yes, you just have to either leave the solenoids from the automatic tranny or put resistors in their place so the computer thinks it's still there. Otherwise, it makes no difference.

There are plenty of threads on this same topic here, I'll look and find some for you.

Was just wondering, that's all. Not looking into this to much, but maybe for another rig down the road.

alright thanks for the parts list. im pretty sure i can find some good deals on parts around where i live. i plan to put 33's and maybe 35's on my rig down the road and i know those automatic tranny's are weak spot in the drive line.

Negative. You can leave the wires un plugged without any resistors, espically if you use a manual transmission PCM.

Yes, you will be 100x better off going with a manual transmission PCM.

Hey Mjones97. Have you had any time to make a 'walkthrough' or step by step on this swap? I have been wanting to do this swap on my 08 ranger (yeah i know, i should have just bought one with a manual)

Willard,

What spec are the resisters? I saw it on a post a while back but, i cannot find it now.

Thanks
