Hey guys my auto tranny has been giving me problems so i finally went to swap it with a friend of mine's he's doing a 5.0 swap so he had a healtly A4LD that he donated to me. The tranny ran strong before he gave it to me but sat for about 2 months before i had time to swap the new tranny into my ranger. :)

problem is that after i swapped the tranny it will not go into gear. it's got plenty of fluid and everything bolted up just fine. did i miss something? has anyone else had this problem? i thought i might have possiblly got gotten the torque converter installed improperly so i removed the tranny again but still got the same problem. :fire:

any suggestions? :banghead:

thanks in advance

mike

First thing that comes to mind is the shift linkage. Second thing is oil pressure. Sounds odd to me that it would be "fine" and not have ANY engagement in ANY gear. Was anything taken apart?

This may be far fetched.
But did you have your driveshafts connected?
This is not a putdown but many moons ago i helped a friend replace his trans.Near the end i had to leave for a family thing.
Later that night he called and said the same thing and he reinstalled it again and no gears at all.Well i stopped by his house later that evening and we were talking in the garage and i noticed his driveshaft leaning against the wall so i asked him if he got a new one instead.
Imagin his face when it hit him what the problem was :)

Also are you sure the torque converter is installed right and bolts tight?
Also how dod you check the fluid?
in park or neutral?
A quick way to tell if it has fluid pressure and the torque convertor is working(not saying they are fine, just that the fluid is moving in the trans) is to disco one of your cooler lines and aim it into a container(an extra piece of hose on the cooler line would help in mess prevention) and then have someone start the vehicle,if nothing happens have them shift it into reverse or drive. If fluid shoots out then you now know that its not the convertor.
Also like said already chek your linkage. Is it connected?is it adjusted right?

yep linkage is fine and where it should be, and yes the drive shaft is there

BUT there was no fluid when i removed the line from the cooler/radiator, what could have caused this?

thanks

Ok there is "apparently" no fluid pressure or movement. Also, did the input shaft get put back in when you installed the torque converter ? Did you do ANYTHING else - like the Vacuum modulator? (a long shot but a possible solution area) Was there positive engagement on the TC and front pump shaft ? Do you have a pressure gauge to screw in to the side port? Certainly sounds like the pump ain't pumping.
