on my 92 xlt explorer the automatic hubs dont work, it goes into 4x4 and low range, and it gears down still , but the front hubs dont work, i was under looking at it today and i tried to spin my front driveshaft? i dunno what the technical name is, and i can spin it, i dont know if i should be able to do this or not.. the only other thing i read up on, is sompthing that happens alot to our trucks, sompthing about a motor, and some hose that breaks. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

The problem is not related tot he shift motor if you are saying that it is shifting into 4x4 hi and lo. You probably need new hubs.

wow! thanks so much.. its kind of nice to know what my problem is , so this doesnt neccessarily mean that both hubs are gone right? because its an open diff so it will apply power to the broken one... im gonna goto the wreckers and check out how much a hub will be, anyone bought one before?.....AGAIN,THANK YOU!

a lot of people here opt to go with the Warn manual hubs... they are cheaper and more durable then the automatic ones, but then you have to get out of the vehicle when you want to engage your 4x4

You can get a repair kit off of Ebay for $30. I rebuilt mine & they have worked fine. Very easy to do.

i was thinking about going with the conversion to manual hubs, but when i checked the price out (lordco) it came to around 450$ for the hubs and some conversion kit..im gonna check ebay and look at these repair kits, is ebay the only place to buy them?

Wanr hubs are about $120, the spindle nuts are another $20, $450 is a JOKE!
Shop around.
The auto hubs will fail on you when you need them most, just my opinion :)

See I don't like teh manuals. I had them on my BII & that outer locknut keep backing off every few hundered miles. I TQ'ed it on to spec, then over spec, Tried different sets, made no difference. That's what stops me from doing this. Is that fixed on an Explorer?

Ok, I think that I have the same problem as 924X4. I can hear and feel the transfer case motor engaging the 4x4 light on the dash comes on but the front tires do not move when the throttle is pressed even though the rear wheels are spinning, does that mean that the autohubs are trashed? Or something else? Thanks for the help!!! BTW, the best current price that I found online for the manual hubs is through 4wheelonline, hubs, conversion kit total $205.28 with free shipping

Jason, If you look at the Nut set. there is a Nut witha Pin in it. The washer with all the holes then the outer large nut. When you had them on your BII did you make sure you put the washer on such that the it slid onto the Flat on the Spindle AND the pin on the nut was in one of the holes in the Washer? That's what locks the inner washer from backing out. then you can put on the outer nut and really tighten that thing down against the Washer.
It's the exact setup as the early Chevy full sized 4WD vehicles. It's been that way on my '85 Chevy for almost 300K miles.
Just gotta really tighten the outer nut.

Yeah it was. That outter nut kept backing off no matter what I did. I'm happy with my auto hubs they work & I just rebuilt them so they will work for a while.

Yeah that happened to mine...called Ford to check the price...$350 EACH. Called 4wheel parts on a set of ProComps...well they weren't in stock so I have a pair of Warns on at $160 for the SET and another 20 or somethin for the conversion kit. Have not had any problems with them thus far.

Hubs

I went the cheap way out & bought mile marker manual hubs & they are the best thing i have EVER bought for my 91 xl. i had had that thing in places that most ppl wouldnt take there cough jeep... and my ex is all stock. I had the same problem when I bought mine so the way to go is MANUAL hubs u know there locked, as far as the auto hubs the will unlock when u need them the most, its a simple conversion, takes about 45 minutes to do it, just make sure you get the KIT to do it with though.... AUTO HUBS SUCK!!!!!

looks like its tooo greasy to me

least mine is nowhere near that greasy

well I think its the outer most ring has a slope with a bump on it... theres sposed to be 3 of them equidistant from each other

I can see one on the upper right there... not sure if the one that should be on the upper left is broken or obscured in grease...

I think that if just one is broken that it will still work 1/3 of the time maybe? I dont really know...

the great thing about having a vehicle with 4 wheels is that you can take the wheel off the other side and compare... saved my butt doing the drumb brakes...
