1997 Explorer XLT
How much difference is there between an automatic in a 1997 4L V-6 OHV and an automatic in a 1999 with a 4L V-6 SOHC. The vin on the '97 says the tranny is either a 44D or a 44M I believe. The reverse in the '99 tranny doesn't work.

RWD or 4x4?

Basically the same, the 97 may have an extra sensor, but they were deleted as per TSB anyway, so it should work.

stickers on the drivers door jamb will say what transmission are in both... what's your goal here? I take it that your trans is messed up and you are looking to score one that you can swap in?

The other way around...got an Explorer with a bad engine...

so, if I understand you, you have 2 explorers.... or the chance to score a 2nd one to mix / match with the one you got...

(1) Currently owned - 1997 XLT 4.0L OHV (bad engine) and an automatic 44D or a 44M (good transmission)
(2) 1999 with a 4.0 SOHC (good engine) with a bad transmission (Reverse is out)

Is this a correct outline?
which one is or are both 4x4?
how much you picking the other up for?
If the good tranny has a bad motor, how can you test drive it for shifting and gear quality? How can you say that is is good?

Also which do you own?

Correct outline. Own the first one. The engine is seized. Shouldn't the transmission have been working when the engine seized?

well, that is up to you to gauge... before engine went, how was the trans feeling for you?
shifting good, all gears?

whats with the 99? are you looking to buy it and put your 97 tranny in the 99 body?

what are both? drive lines? 4x4?

I'm pretty sure there's some considerable wiring differences between the two transmissions with the sensors, not 100% on that though.

Hmm. If it were me I'd fix the 97 OHV engine.

^As a owner of two SOHCs and a 5.0 V8, I second this opinion, the OHV engines are far superior.
