I cant remember if I told you guys but....last summer I went wheeling through some bogs and mud and deep 3 1/2 - 4ft of water crossings 3 times in like 2 weeks. Then about 2weeks later while driving through the city it made a shudder then about a mile later started to slip and then white smoke engulfed all 4 lanes of traffic behind me. It looked like it was almost a steady stream of fast drips and was hitting the crossover exhaust pipe ...cuasing the white smoke. I made it home but none of the gears would move the truck. So there it sat for about 6 months. I put 3 quarts of fluid in it yesterday and reverse worked well and low 2nd worked great with no slipping. I drove it to the tranny shop and when i went to park it it lost all pressure again and none of the gears would even think about moving the truck. I kept it running and poured in another 2 quarts of fluid and talked with a friend then got back in and all the gears came back...the truck was not leaking fluid for the whole trip over or where it was parked...we would have seen it in the white snow if it had leaked. We told the xmsn mechanic this story and he shook his head and said he would look at it today...

EDIT: There was a fire when I parked it in my driveway...the fluid on the exhaust right where the tranny bolts to the engine and the pipe crosses. Good thing I had a fire extinguisher.

anyone want to venture a guess as to what might be wrong with the tranny. its a 92 with an OD tranny.

Thanks!

cracked case? Loose front pan bolts?

There is a vacuum modulator that cracks and the tranny fluid gets sucked into the engine.....

do you think after holding it to the floor for half a mile and barely moving at 6krpms that the bands are still good?

GEEZE !!!!!!!!!! Stay away from MY Explorer....!!!

Hey guys...just wanted to give you an update on my tranny.

Ok, so I dropped it off to a man that has been servicing xmsns for at least 40years in the local area. He said he dropped the pan and the filter was clogged with junk/metal too...he said he seen allot of metal the size of pencil lead tips. Dont take it on long trips he says..haha, $50 was all he charged. He said that what might have happend was the filter was plugged and the fluid may have run out from the filler tube. When I parked it for 3months all that junk fell off the filter allowing me to drive it to his place. He said it was WAAAAAy over full with fluid. The first night I had it we got bombed with 18inches of snow so I was out there doing 10mph but the conditions were so bad that I couldnt see and went into a 4ft ditch. I ended up testing the tranny right there. It held up fine with no slipping...I love 4wheel drive =)

I did lose the altenator though. =( $200-300 new, or $35 at the local salvage yard.

So now I think I need lockers and gears and fender flares as the 33's stick out a tad.
