When I replaced my rear brake pads last week I noticed that the axial play on both sides are not normal. I can move the disc and the axel in and out about 1/10". Is this something that can be adjusted or do I need new bearings? can't hear any noise from there.
The knowledge about american cars are very limited here in Sweden so please help me with this.
The X is a -97 SOHC 4x4

The axle is held in with a C clip

to keep it from pulling out. The axle is restrained from going in further by a pinion lock shaft. When this locking shaft is removed, the shaft can be pushed in and the C lock will fall out. There is an O ring in the C lock groove that goes toward the wheel.

The above is to give you a general idea of the internal construction. You would have to have some very unusual wear on the pinion lock or the C lock to have excessive play. The amount of play you have seems normal. If the axle was ever removed, the O ring may be on the other side.

The amount of play you describe sounds pretty normal to me.
