Axle lube specifications

Ditto, you need the OEM fluid recommendation at least to be sure it's an ATF versus gear oil, the viscosity is much different for a transfer case and a diff.
 






I Believe in 2011 and newer Explorers it's Backwards. It is primarily a front wheel drive vehicle when in 2WD mode and the rear axle engages only when 4WD is needed. So the rear axle is the part time differential which I believe is why the front uses the heavier oil and the rear uses the lighter oil

That was changed with the 2020 model year. The 2020 is RWD bias.
