Howdy. After a little while of leaving yo forum, I'll be back as a regular visitor. However, I am selling my '92 Eddie Bauer. When a potential buyer was driving it, it happened to run out of gas. (don't ask) But now, it won't start. I've added 6 gallons to the tank, let it sit, cranked it for a long time, checked the emergency pump shut off switch and big fuse, but it still won't start. Turns over just fine. But it's like nothing it there. It sputtered a little with ether. Could it be from a clogged filter, when it might have sucked up some bologna in the tank? Thank you.

maybe some dammage was done to your feul pump, checked it yet?

i would replace the filter cause its cheap and probably needs to be done anyway

Either the fuel filter or fuel pump are clogged.

Exactly. When you get that low on gas, you suck up alot of scum. I would replace the filter first, then go from there. Good luck.

Is there any problems with sucking air into the system?

Seems to me I remember hearing that running a fuel injected engine dry could get air inside the lines and cause some sort of "lock" that would make you need to bleed the system.

I`ve heard of people running out of gas and never having to do that, so I never could verify the story.
If I ever run out of gas for the first time, I want someone to come and shoot me please..

If you need to bleed the system, I would only reccomend getting a fuel pressure tester from discount auto parts or something so you can bleed into a container. That would bleed all the way up to the fuel rails. Anyways, keep us posted.

Update

Thanks for your input. My local mechanic is coming over today to check the fuel pump pressure, and I guess it'll help find what's wrong. He's worked on my Ex before, and was a Ford mechanic during the 1st generation Exs. I'll let you all know soon.

Mechanic came over...

Howdy. This morning, my mechanic did come over and connected a pressure gauge to a port on top of the engine. It read nothing when the ignition was turned on to "run." He also tested all the relays (the big fuse-looking things under the hood) and he then said that the pump died. I watched him the entire time and trust him, so I don't think he's lying. I theroized that crud got in it when it ran out of gas, and got clogged, and burned up when I was cranking. He's going to put it on the lift next week and get in back in service. Thanks to all who replied.

OK, how did that get there.

6 gallons, At least the tank won't be too heavy when you remove it.

Try to replace the pump only, $40, vs pump assembly, $200. Basically you remove the pump assembly, remove the pump and put in a new pump.

Did the mechanic say anything about the fuel filter? I would replace that before going to the trouble of dropping the tank and putting in a new pump.

Gasolines acts as a coolant for the fuel pump. When you run the engine all the way down, you let the fuel pump overheat and it goes out. This is unfortunately what probably happened. Do you hear the fuel tank hiss when you turn the key to On?
