Bad camshaft position sensor effects?

My camshaft position sensor squeeks when cold, and Ford wants $600 to replace it. What does the camshaft position sensor do? What would cause it to make noise? Does it have any negative effects on gas mileage?

Is the senor bad? Or does it just squeak? I wouldn't pay anyone 600 bucks just to fix a squeak for me.

I really need updates on what happens.

Mine squeaks like a b!tch, kind of like a small bird going crazy under the hood. It drives me nuts! Ford also wanted almost $600 to replace mine, or ~$400 for the part alone. I don't think so.

Let me know if you find a way to fix it!
