- 97 Sport Controle Trac4wd
I have somewhat the same issue.
97 explorer sport control trac 4wd with the auto/high/low turn switch.
Im tryn to sell it or trade it for something else if i cant figure this out.
When starting I get a clunk/thump sounding as if a broken trans mount.
Then when i put it in reverse it dont grind going it but i let out on the clutch it makes a noise kinda like a grind of something turning.
If i wait with the clutch in for a while eventualy i let out on it the thing takes rev. If i back onto a bump it releases the gear and starts the grinding again but the stick never moves.
This noise also happens when im persay at 40 mph and i let it cost below the pull of the gear im in.
I have no power loss and 1-5 works perfect.
Here is the odd part. I put it in 4wd low or high i have none of these problems it runs perfect not grinding or bumping what so ever. But when makeing a right turn it sounds like the front wheel isnt engaged in 4wd or its tryn to engage and becomes hard for a bit to move i turn it streight or left I have no problem at all. Now with all this info please help me figure this out.
On a second note this tax time I was thinking of replaceing the 4.0 with a 4.6 GT engine and trans 5speed and converting it to a rwd only unit and tossing some white Cobra R rims on it. It is Grabber Green lol. How hard would it be to do this and what in quickes format would you say it could be done.
