I plan to take my '06 V6 in to the dealer this weekend but wondered if anyone else had encountered this problem. Recently, during the hot spell and with my a/c on or off, the engine starts to make a loud blowing sound from around 1500 RPM to around 2500 RPM. At first I thought it was the a/c compressor but it has begun to happen without the a/c on. I recently had the oil changed at the local gas station and checked for loose hoses etc. Any ideas?

Thank you!

Might just be the fan, couldn't say without hearing it though.

Well it sounds like the fan but why would it all of a sudden start spooling up like that? Is it just responding to warmer temps? I don't recall it doing that last year or the year before.

Oops. I forgot to mention, a couple of times it seems like my thermostat hasn't opened up and the temp has gone up into the red shortly after start up then all of a sudden drops down to normal. Maybe I need a new thermostat. Do new cars have the same system as my old Jeep?

Clueless!

Radiator fan on o6 and up is mechanically driven but electronically regulated so it can suddenly increase the fan speed (noise) at a given engine RPM. If you look between the fan and waterpump you will see a wire harness running from driver side and then straight down to the fan. Basically it is a more expensive and complex version of the heat activated fan clutch which was common for decades.

Thanks for the explanation of how the fan works. My 06 V8 does the same thing. I've wondered about it, but haven't heard it enough to worry about it.

Yeah, its definitely the fan. Mine has been spooling up often at low speeds now that its hot out.

Mine has done it 3 or four times as well. Is it normal in high temperatures? Never happened over the winter but each time it happens its in the low 90's.....
