I can spin the fan just with a little push, and it spins for a few seconds before stopping. What should I expect from replacing this? I haven't noticed any problems recently.
Yes, the fan clutch only fully engages when it gets hot. Otherwise you would have terrible gas milage and it would take a while to warm up. It should spin almost freely when its cold.
hey on my 94xlt the heat gauge usaually stays around "o" and "r" but sometimes it gose really high towards "m" and "a" i start to worry but then it just shoots back down could it be a thermostat?? or could there be a clogg in the radiator??
sounds like the warning signs of a failing tstat. If I were you, I would replace it ASAP. It's like an $8 that will save u tons of trouble if it does go(esp if it sticks closed like mine did)
Sometimes if the only problem you see is the dash gauge moving, it can pay to actually check the temperature. Dash gauges are just as effective and measuring the voltage in your electrical system. A bad connection or other fluctuation in the voltage can cause the gauge to move, even if the temperature is steady. Easiest way I've found to do this is to hook up a voltmeter across the computer's ECT and monitor it.
If it confirms that your temperature is going too high, then start with the thermostat and go from there.
If it shows that the temperature is steady, then check the sending unit and associated wiring.
