after putting 31/10.5 and taking out the muffler on my 91 x my gas mileage is at like 10-11 mpg now...
i didnt think either would make that much of a difference, anything i could do to get better mileage

I have 32x11.50's and i get 12 MPG city or highway. The X is not going to get great gas mileage because it being an SUV, and the 4.0 engine is not the best in the world for MPG. Some people do get decent gas mileage, but tehy are just the lucky ones.

I've got 33/12.5's and im getting right at 18mpg every fillup sometimes its a little better somtimes worse the best ive gotten so far is 19.2 all freeway driving in od.

Here's a though.... No laughing please

When I went to 31's on my X, I noticed a major drop on mileage too.

Remember, unless you recalibrate your spedometer, your speed will be off, and your odometer also as in my Gen2. Therefore making it LOOK like you were getting less gas mileage. Your sped is off my 10% slower, therefore your odo is 10%, and your gas mileage as well.

Just my 2cents.

Well I have heard of the speedometer being off but the odometer I have never heard of and I was getting 12 to 13 city stock and maybe 14 if i was lucky on highway. Now after my 32's I get 12 city or highway.

I just noticed that in my X, when I upgraded to 31's, my mileage per tank dropped to approx. 285 km/ tank, then when I replaced the gear on the vss, my mileage is now about 390-400 per tank.

I change nothing else, and as far as I know, the odometer would be directy linked to the spedo.

or its just a coincidence that my milage returned as soon as I changed the gear on the vss.

Put the muffler back on you don’t generally gain power from taking it off. you need the backpressure you will get better gas if it is back on. buy a aftermarket one that flows better then you will gain some power and get a little better gas also. also clean sensors, throttle body, maf sensor and so on. Try sea foam that really worked well for me.

I just did a seafoam treatment to my X, and i can't believe just one can did that much to help it.

For a while I ran no muffler and no tailpipe, and my mileage was horrible, I put on a 40 series flowmaster with a 2" tailpipe, i'm getting 18 at my best, and that's in city mind you...

a few tricks here and there can get it up, just remember there's not one part that'll give you 10mpg, it all adds up, start with the little stuff and work your way up, there's no reason to not get the best mileage possible (except for money reasons, lol)

There are a lot of little things you can do. many have already been stated, but the reality of it is, these trucks are never going to get good mileage. I too am running 31x10.5s and get about 11mpg city. it sucks, but its life. sythetic oil might help too, but i run max-life on my high mileage engine

It's the speedo. I had the same issue, so just for ***** and grins I started watching my odometer VS mile markers on the freeway. Well guess what, it was off 1.5 tenths. Now I just multiply the mileage reading by .15 and HOLY **** I'm getting 19mpg again.

Its not that easy. The faster you go, the more it is off. I am guessing you were going about 65- 70mph when you were testing the mile markers on a highway. Well when you are going 30-45MPH in the city, your speedometer is only off by probably a .05 factor, not 1.5.

So I would say multiply it between .6 and .8 in the city, and between 1.2 and 1.4 on the highway. This will give you a more realistic figure.

Another reason to do your city by .6 to .8 is because acceleration from 0-10 is not effected by the speedometer error so should not be calculated at the 1.5 rate.

I never even thought about the odometer. Thats a good point.
