Help!
We added another X to our family in November.
It's a '98 4.0L with auto 4x4.
Our '93 gets better mileage than this beast with a whopping 12-14 MPG.
The '93 got at least 18 MPG.
I have spoken to a person who said they had a '98 with the auto 4x4 and got about the same mileage, they traded up to a 2000 without the auto 4x4 and got MUCH better gas mileage.

Has anyone else had this experience?
Is there any way I can improve it?
With the price of gas the way it is, 220 miles to a tank of gas really isn't cuttin it!
Looking forward to your comments, and thanks in advance for any help!

Tammy

i have a 98 4.0 auto and thats the same mileage im getting. i used to average about 15.5 - 16 when it was new for about 2 years. then it just gradually got worse. I keep it in tip top shape. All the maintence and tune-ups on time and 80% of maintence done @ dealership.

yeah, the person that had mine before me kept immaculate records of everything he did to it and at what mileage. It's been well maintained.
It's a '98 with only 70,000 miles on it.
You didn't see any improvement with the K&N air filter? We thought about trying the Tornado or a K&N filter to try and improve it.

Thats pretty good I only get 10mpg hwy and between 6-8 around town! I'm only getting 160 miles to a tank at most. I think its time I do a tune-up.

Nothing really noticeable

youll be waiting your money on the tornado....total waste...theres thread on it if you dont believe me, dyno tested and all.

My mileage was getting pretty bad, about 12mpg, but after changing the primary timing chain, it's up to 19mpg. I don't know if it's just coincedence, or the slack in the chain putting the engine out of time causing the poor mileage.

Yeah, I think thats not farr off from average.

I have gotten 18mpg in the best possible case scenario on the highways.

But usually between 12-15 around town.

Thanks for the info- we were wondering if it's hype was real or not...

I was reading some other threads about changing the thermostat to get better mileage... any comments?

Does anyone agree with the boyfriend that the automatic 4 wheel drive sucks the gas? Mine also has the limited slip differential. I like having the automatic 4 wheel drive, but if it causes that bad of gas mileage, I'm not sure I like it that much! I'm not used to having to fill up every week!

I think the tornado is a waste of metal also. I have seen a few customers at work that have bought them, and nobody thinks it was worth the money.

my 96' 4x4 4.0 ohv was getting 17MPG mixed drving before i got it..it has not seen more then 300 miles in the year 1/2 i have had it. but soon as i get it on the road i will get some #s.

my dads v8 AWD is getting 14MPG in the winter(mixed drving)..gets like 16 in the summer mixed drving..

so yours sould be getting much better MPG i would think..
