I filled up on my way to work -- reputable gas station --- BP gas -- high volume place I have been many times.
I get to work and park fine. Later I am driving to an appointment and the ST dies while driving. It immediately starts up again. I start driving and it dies again. So, I had it towed home. I don't even consider gas.
This is a 2003 ST with 175,000. I have driven it about 5000 since I bought it.
Attempt 1 to fix:
Replaced the fuel filter - not sure if the replaced one was original or not? I took off the intake. MAF looked very clean so I left it alone. I cleaned the IAC and the throttle body, which had a ton of carbon.
After this, the ST started right up and idled smooth, with signs of improvement, but when I drove it, it stalled pretty quickly. A couple of times it was harder to start which made me thinks the fuel pump was giving out and getting weaker.
One of my old neighbors said I likely had bad fuel. He told me to dump some stabilizer in it. I dismissed him but dumped in some Lucas Ethanol treatment I have for the boat in to quiet him down. I did not drive it or do anything after this, so no mixing of the Lucas or getting it into the system.
Attempt 2 to fix:
I changed out the fuel pump and AC relays. I also pushed on the inertia switch. It definitely made a click.
I drove the ST and at first was optimistic, but it eventually did the same thing. Drove it less than 1 miles, but likely this allowed the Lucas get mixed in.
Attempt 3 to test:
When to Autozone. Their fuel pressure kit would not test my pressure, missing a part. I did see that I had pressure to my fuel rail, but got a 0 reading. Started truck but did not drive to know if problem still there.
I went and bought a fuel pressure tester different store. This once connected and I immediately got 65 psi. Turned truck off, it held 65 psi. No loss. Rigged up the pressure gauge to drive around to see what the pressure would be when the symptoms presented.
That was 3 days ago and the stalling has not come back.
Truck is running great.
Could it be I got some ****ty gas and the ethanol treatment stabilized it enough for me to burn it off? I am trying to burn as much as I can to put in a fresh tank of 100% gasoline. I did fill up the morning the stalling started? Was my old neighbor right?
Right not I am not confident enough to drive it my 30 mile commute to work.
