Continuing on from my AC compressor failure, I've replaced the U joint on the drive shaft however it appears it is indeed the rear bearings that are causing noise and vibration.

Whilst I understand this is a **** of a job I am also concerned about the tranny.

When I change from park to drive or reverse I do get anything from a big thump to a gentle change.

When pulling away I need to get the revs up, come off the pedal and let it change gear. All other gears appear to be fine.

Can anyone advise?

Take it to a trans shop, have them drop the pan and see what it looks like. If no metal shavings or pieces, get a filter and fluid change and see if that helps. When this happened to me in my 01 5.0 (4R70W) it signaled the end of my transmission.

Whatever you do, if your transmission guy advises you that you need a new transmission, DO NOT just go grab one from a JY, because chances are that one will die soon too. Either pay for a full rebuild with warranty, or punt the truck.
