I bought a Badlands wireless winch remote on a whim from Harbor Freight. I read in the reviews it works on Warn winches, and I had a coupon so it only cost $19.99. It does and its a simple process to get it to work:
Here is what comes in the package;
The female connector is a five pin, just like the Warn winch, but its too small of a diameter to fit the Warn male. Using a small curved hand file, I carefully took a little material off the inside of the plug until it snugly fit onto the male Warn connector. I suppose you could use a Dremel with a small grinding attachment but I usually end up taking too much off with power tools. Here is a pic of the female connector;
What the instructions do not tell you: I read the instructions and did not see any mention of a ground wire. I assumed the green wire coming out of the box was an antenna for the remote. Wrong, its a ground wire. So I read the instructions again. No where in the instructions is there mention that it is a ground wire. Once I figured that out, the rest was easy.
Pic of the little green wire;
It seems to work well with only a little lag. I walked about 50 feet away and it functioned. I was impressed. The Warn remote is around $150.00 so I saved myself $130.00. I have not mounted it yet because I am planning on some major modifications and did not want to have to move it if it got in the way.
Next time they go on sale, I think I will get another one to give as a gift.
