I've noticed that many have BBK TB's, I was wondering if these really work well. I have a granatelli MAF (70mm i think), would this mod help build on that at all? Would I notice a significant difference?
Thanks
Greg

I already have the MAF too, and yes I noticed a difference with the BBK TB on. I noticed it all the way through the powerband too, from idle to WOT. But be warned about BBK TB's...

Only problem was I couldn't get the throttle flap to close, it kept sticking open just a little, which threw off the idle and downshifting. So right now I'm trying to get Summit to exchange it for another one.

Thanks for the warning:eek: . How long did you have it until it started to demonstrated those symptoms? Did it happen right away, or was it several miles down the road.
It improved performance? Sweet, I might have to give a try!
Greg

I've had mine for 3.5 years without any problems and with a noticable power gain.

Geez, this mod sounds like a pretty good deal. Thanks for the replies, where is the best place to buy? I noticed Summit is backordered, do they have the best price?

Mine also had no problems, i likey

Well the BBK TB was sticking from the time I first installed it. I never could get the flap to close all the way at idle, and I did everything me and my mechanic and my buddies could think of...throttle cable, TPS, lith grease, re-wind the springs, nothing worked, and we're not a bunch of novices when it comes to this stuff. So we concluded it was a defective unit so I sent it back to summit for an exchange.

Summit sent me a letter saying "We need a valid warranty reason for return. No Reason was given with return of the throttle body." Well this was news to me, I filled out the return form as instructed and put "D" for defective as the reason. Hmph. Well anyway I called them and told them the whole story and they said they would look into it. Why do they even need any more reason than "part is defective"? I can see the need for a reason for a RETURN, where they would have to give credit or a refund, but this is an EXCHANGE. It would be no skin off their backs to do it, I even pay for re-shipment of the new TB. Summit had better do it or else..

try truckperformance.com

Dont bother, I ordered one from them two weeks ago. Just got an email form them the other day. They say it's on back order for atleast 2 more weeks!

Man, when it comes to modding my truck, I have all the bad luck!

One last question- (BTW, thanks alec for the link ;) ) isn't the point of this mod to expand the diameter of the TB so as to increase air flow? That's a great idea, but won't the connection point to the upper manifold still stay the same, thereby maintaining the problematic choke point? Even if the TB is widened, won't the air be restricted at that entry point?
Still, you guys have all said that it increases performance, so it has to do something. Am I wrong? (I probably am...:D )
Thanks
Greg

Damn, so truckperformance.com is still b/o...:(
MOre time for research I guess...:D :D

The stock intake manifold is capable of flowing much more air than the stock intake components. I don't remember exactly, but when I installed the BBK TB on my stock upper intake the TB outlet was not larger than the manifold inlet. If it was, I would have gasket matched the manifold.

Ok, Im glad to hear that not everyone is having problems. I purchased mine from TruckPerformance and it was due to ship the 26th. Its been 3 weeks since the order. With the 410 cam, P/P heads, T/B, Borla headers, Intake kit and SuperChip I'm expecting 25% increase in power--maybe a little more.:D

I got mine last month from Explorer Express for $250 and they shipped it next day.

one problem you might have is this... you have to set how far open the throttle should be at idle by disconnecting the iac, and adjusting a screw until your engine idles at 500 rpms. I was too lazy to do this at first, and the car acted funny, I went back and did it later and it was all good.

Wow, really that low on the rpm's??? My 93 Sport w/manual 5 spd idles at 950-1000 rpm's. My other two explorers both automatics idle around 750 rpm's and sometimes I can't tell if they are running.

500 rpms WITH the Idle Air Controller UNplugged. It goes back up to normal when you plug it back in.

Are you psychotic (;) ) Sorry I just had to say that.
Thanks for the tip, I'm still deciding whether or not to get it, I'm just not sure it will give me a noticable difference in performance. (No offense, I'm just always skeptical of mods)
I do have a 70mm MAF, I'm thinking that it might work well in conjunction with that mod...but I'm still undecided. I took a look at the stock TB, it looks like it narrows down substantially, I guess that the BBK TB is consistently wider in stature, that would give more air and more power as a result.
I'M CONFUSED:confused:

If you already have the MAS then the TB will undoubtedly help.

When I disconnected the IAC, my truck died, every time.

Tell me how you did this...

there is a screw on the bottom left of the BBK, and you screw it in and it opens the throttle plate a tad. You do this until you can keep the truck running at 500 rpms with the IAC unplugged, then un hook the negative cable on the battery, reconnect the IAC, reconnect the battery, and start it up.

The reason yours dies, is because when the throttle plate closes, it makes a seal so no air can get to the motor. the purpose of setting this is so even when the trottle plate is closed, the motor gets some engine. This also may be why your throttle body sticks??? its not meant to close completely
