bearings??

Can some one tell me when the front wheel bearing need to be replaced. Do they make grinding noise. I have a sound like a out of round tire hitting the pavement on each revolution like a whoop whoop sound. could this be bearings sound like its from the drivers side front. Tires checked out fine no issues with them. When moving along at ~30-40 you can hear this disturbing whomp whomp?? noise. Any help is greatly appreaciated.(sp?)
