Hey guys. I just got my Amsoil order in, and my axle and pinion seals should be here by the weekend. Im going to be replacing the front and rear diff fluids as part of this job.

Im looking for opinions/suggestions on the best "gasket maker" for the diff covers. Last time i changed the rear fluid, i used Black RTV. But it wasn't long before it started leaking.

I can't remember how long, if at all, that i waited from when i put the cover back on, to when I added the new fluid, if that makes a difference? Perhaps I'm answering my own question :)

But just looking for a real good gasket maker as I want to be "done" with the diff. fluids for a loong time after I put the Amsoil in, don't want anymore leaking :D

On a side note, if anyone has a GOOD front driveshaft on the cheap, I'm interested! Mine is shot, lying on the floor in the garage for the time being.

Thanks!

Adam.

IMO the permatex ultra grey is the best. I have also used the high temp red, blue, and black rtv on diff covers without problems. The important thing is cleaning the surfaces really well with brake clean before applying the sealant. I apply the rtv on the cover let it sit about 5 mins then place it on the diff and hand screw the bolts down evenly until the rtv barely starts to squeeze out, then let it cure for a couple of hrs before final torquing the bolts down. I wait another 24hrs to let it fully cure before putting the gear oil in. I have never had a leak using this procedure. Note: I live in the south where it is warmer so cure times here are faster, if you live in a colder climate area then the cure times will be longer.

Wow, yea i definately didn't do 24hours for cure time lol!!

Now that you mention it, i remember using the Ultra grey on my buddy's nissan altima for EVERY gasket it needed when put his motor back together when the head gasket blew. Doesnt leak anything yet and its been quite a few miles and a couple years now.
Thanks for your input!

Adam.
